Final Episode 15

Ifeoma: Why is that?

Ikedi: Because, if I had done that at a young age, I won’t be hear listening to what the doctor said today.

Ifeoma: that is in the past now, at least you have a child now and that is something to be grateful for.

Ikedi: it is because of me that my child is the way he is. This is really worst than the wasted money! Why will the poor boy Obiechina suffer over my own mistakes? Hmmm…

Ifeoma: Don’t beat yourself up for the mistake made, there is nothing you can do about it except helping him with his therapy.

Ikedi: Hmmm, when I had it all, I never knew it will end up like this.

Ifeoma: That’s life for you.
Ikedi: Wow! This life, nobody can say how someone will end. I thought I had my life all figured out. Everything dawned on me when my mother died.

Ifeoma: What do you mean?

Ikedi: I thought that I had my whole life planned just the way I wanted it, Give birth to as many kids as I want whenever I am ready but look at my life now.

Ifeoma: but you have obiechina with you.
Ikedi: Ifeoma you won’t understand. When I was much younger, I used to think that I can give birth anytime I want and if I want. I thought that it is only the woman that go through biological timing, I didn’t know that men do too else I wouldn’t make the mistake I made while still young.

Ifeoma: There is nothing you can do except accept things the way they are.

You should just focus on the one you have at hand afterall, you still have your step children with you and they look up to you as their father.

Ikedi: It also means that there is no way I will be want to have another child after what I have just discovered.

Ifeoma: It’s a 50/50 chance if you want to try with another.

Ikedi: Hmmm, I think this is my final bus stop. I wouldn’t want to take chances and let an innocent child suffer for my own mistake. Like i mentioned earlier, it is worst than the wasted money. I’ve wasted money enough but this one beats beyond it.

Ifeoma: I wish a lot of men out there knows the truth, I wish they know that as they age, they sperm count reduces. I hope your story will serve as a lesson to others and our children.

Ikedi: You are very right, they need to know that as technology is advancing, so new things are been discovered.

Ifeoma: Gone are the days when it is only the woman that suffers alone, men should also brace up and take charge of their life.

Ikedi: if I tell you that I have truly accepted what the doctor said, I will
be lying to you. Men also have biological clock? Wonders will never end.

Ifeoma: New findings coming out every day. Thank God it is not only the women that have biological clock.

Ikedi: Hmmm.
Ifeoma: Anyway, Obiechina’s therapy will start soonest.

Ikedi: I will make sure I do everything possible to make my child whole again.
Ifeoma: He is already well in Jesus name.
Ikedi: Amen! Amen!

Few years later, Ikedi dropped his son at school and was handing him his school bag when Obiechina smiled at him.

Obiechina: Dad, you do not have to worry to come pick me up from school, I will follow my friends home.

Ikedi: And why is that?
Obiechina: Because you are not too strong, remember that you are just recovering.

Ikedi: Okay, I will stay at home and have more rest if that is what you want.

Obiechina: Yes! I also want you to eat and take your drugs on time.

Ikedi: ‘Done’ he raised his right hand in the air.

Obiechina: I also want you to rest well and don’t stress yourself.

Ikedi: ‘Done! Now get going before you get punished by your teacher for coming to school late’ he said to him and waved him goodbye.

When he was sure that his son is safe in school, he turned around and met a woman looking and smiling at him.

Woman: Wow sir, your grandson is so handsome and cute.

Ikedi: Thanks but he is not my grandson but my son.

Woman: Really! She said for she was shocked at what he just said ‘I am sorry ooo, I didn’t know he is your son’ she said and walked away.

As soon as she was a few steps away she turned back and looked at Ikedi again. ‘Hmmm, wonders will never end, how can an old man be the father to that small boy, wetin we no go see for this world oooo’ she said and clapped her hands.

Ikedi: Hmmm, I wish I had Obiechina when I was much younger, Had I known the world will look at me the way that woman just did, I wouldn’t have made this mistake.

Episode 14

Doctor: We need to do more test and evaluation on your child.

Ifeoma: Doctor, What is the problem with him?

Doctor: Your child is suffering from Autism.

Ifeoma: Is that the reason why he hardly mingle with his peers and doesn’t smile and communicate?

Doctor: That is one of many reasons why he behaves the way he does.

Ifeoma: All my children were okay during childbirth, how come his own is different?

Doctor: We can’t really say but a lot of factor could be at play here.

Ifeoma: What do you mean?
Doctor: When you were pregnant, did you take care of yourself and unborn baby?

The kind of alcohol you took and maybe, just maybe the paternal age could also play a role here.

Ikedi: What do you mean Paternal age doctor?

Doctor: Ermmm, at what age did you give birth to your son?

Ikedi: You mean Obiechina?
Doctor: Yes.

Ikedi: Sixty three, sixty four.
Doctor: Okay, you gave birth at an old age if I am allowed to use that word.

Ikedi: What has that got to do with my son being an Autism patient here?

Doctor: recent research carried out over the years has shown that the more the genetic quality of sperm, as well as its volume and motility, all may decrease with age especially when the man is over fifty years old.

Ifeoma: Meaning?
Doctor: Meaning that, permit me to use the layman language here please.

Ikedi: Go ahead.
Doctor: just as how the woman reaches menopause, Men also have their own male biological clock. The higher the age, the lower their sperm count.

Ikedi: I don’t believe this; that is not true.
Doctor: it is sir and it could be one of the reason why your child has autism that is, if other factors have been ruled out.

Ikedi: That is not true, it is a lie.
Doctor: it is sir; men also have their own biological clock.

Ikedi: How come I have never heard of this, no one told me?

Doctor: Because it is a recent research and not a lot of people are well informed about this.

Ikedi: My God! What other effect aside from Autism can a father pass to his children?

Doctor: A lot and they include; autism, schizophrenia, dwarfism or Apert syndrome and a lot more.

Ikedi: Why is awareness not created, a lot of people have no idea that men also have their own biological clock?

Doctor: That is why we are using this medium, Adelove blog to create awareness so that our men will know and be alert on the dangers of having children at old age.

Ifeoma: Doctor, will my son be okay?
Doctor: He will be. He just needs to undergo therapy for a couple of weeks or months, depending on how he responds to them.

Ifeoma: I just want my son to be normal like his other siblings.

Doctor: Do not worry Madame, we will do our best.

Ikedi: Doctor, I really want my son to be oaky and please do whatever you can to help us.

Doctor: I will do my best.

When they got home to prepare for Obiechina’s to commence his therapy, Ifeoma walked up to her husband.

Ifeoma: Ikedi, What are you thinking?
Ikedi: Nothing much.

Ifeoma: Which means there is something, talk to me.

Ikedi: I was just thinking about what the doctor said.

Ifeoma: About the male biological clock?
Ikedi: Yes but aside from that, I have so many regrets.

Ifeoma: What other regrets do you have?
Ikedi: Regrets that I never listened when I was spoken to.

Ifeoma: What do you mean?
Ikedi: I wished I had listened to my mother when she warned me severally about having a child when I was much younger.

Ifeoma: Is that the regrets you have now?
Ikedi: That is the biggest regret of my life.

Episode 13

With the help of the teacher assigned daily to look after Obiechina, Ifeoma was able to know how her child was faring.

Ifeoma: ‘Good day Chinonso’ for that is her name.

Chinonso: Good day Ma.
Ifeoma: How is my child interacting with other of his peers please?

Chinonso: To be sincere with you ma, I think he is a little bit reserved and withdrawn Ma. He doesn’t communicate or get close to anybody.

Ifeoma: Why is that so?
Chinonso: Its simple Ma, your son cannot say any meaning full two words phrase no matter how hard we try to help him, he hardly smiles, does not imitate sound and movement of other peers unlike other children, still unable to say two or three words. I think you should see a pediatric doctor.

Ifeoma: You really think that is the best solution right now?

Chinonso: Yes it is and the earlier it is done the better.

Ifeoma: Thank you so much for taking care of my child, I will see to it that something is done about it as soon as possible.

Chinonso: ‘You are welcome Ma. Let me go to the classroom and check up on the kids’ she said and left Ifeoma who was lost in thought.

When she got home with Obiechina, she met Ikedi who was in the house already waiting for her.

Ifeoma: This one that you are back home so early, hope no problem?

Ikedi: No Problem he said and went ahead to carry his son who was just busy looking at him without any emotion. ‘hey son, how was school today’ he looked at his son who neither nod nor reply, shook his head and handed him to his mother. ‘I came home early because I wanted to talk to you about something.

Ifeoma: What is it? Hope nothing happened?

Ikedi: Nothing happened, why?
Ifeoma: Ah! This one you want to talk to me about something, I am wondering what it is.

Ikedi: Tend to our son and when you are done, I will be in the room waiting for you.

Ifeoma : Okay she said and went to see to the needs of Obiechina.

When she was done, she put him to bed and went to her husband ‘What is it you wanted to talk to me about?

Ikedi: I have something I want to say and please, all you have to do is think about it before you say anything else.

Ifeoma: Okay, what is it?
Ikedi: I want us to make another baby.
Ifeoma: You what?

Ikedi: Want us to make another baby.
Ifeoma: Are you for real?
Ikedi: Meaning?
Ifeoma: Are you serious?
Ikedi: Yes I am.

Ifeoma: I am sorry Ikedi but in this case, there is nothing to think about. I or rather, we are not making more babies.

Ikedi: Why? You have not reached menopause have you?

Ifeoma: I haven’t but it still doesn’t mean that I will want to have another child when I have six children already.

Ikedi: and I have only one. And that one is the only one from my loins.

Ifeoma: Is it my fault that you have only one child? I am not going to go through the process of birthing another child just the way we did for Obiechina. Your son, my last born is and was my last bus stop. If you still want to go ahead and have a child, you are on your own ooo.

Ikedi: What do you mean?
Ifeoma: If you want to go outside and pregnant another woman to carry your child, feel free.

Ikedi: Are you saying you want me to have an affair?

Ifeoma: Do whatever you want to do, you are on your own. I have given you what I can, period.

Ikedi: Will you be okay if your husband has a child outside?

Ifeoma: Ikedi, I am way past that. If you want to do it, do it but right now, we have a very serious issue at hand.

Ikedi: What is it again?
Ifeoma: Your son is not okay, he needs medical attention.

Ikedi: I told you to let him be, he will come around in no time.

Ifeoma: No Ikedi, something is wrong.
Ikedi: I told you nothing is wrong.
Ifeoma: Ikedi, I am a mother of five plus Obiechina making it six. I know when a child is not okay.

Ikedi : Hmmm, what do you want me to do now?

Ifeoma: We need to take him to the hospital tomorrow.

When they got to the hospital, they were referred to the children ward where a doctor attended to them. After series of Evaluation and test conducted

Doctor: Madame, you are very lucky to have brought your child here.

Ikedi: Doctor, is anything the matter? He asked for he was scared for the outcome of the result.

Episode 12

Ikedi: You worry too much; he will come around in his own time.

Ifeoma: I do not think that is the situation with our son.

Ikedi: Give him time ifeoma, he will come around. Every child is different in their own way.

Ifeoma: but this one is different, he can’t say a few words properly.

Ikedi: okay, fine. What do you want us to do now?

Ifeoma: I would like to take him to the hospital for medical check - up.

Ikedi: Alright but it won’t be now; if after six months he doesn’t improve then you can take him to a hospital.

Ifeoma: In that case, I would like to send him to kindergarten for him to see his peers and mingle with, maybe that would change him a bit and enable him talk faster.

Ikedi: If that is what you want, fine by me.
Ifeoma: Thanks dear.

Few Days later, Nkiruka paid a visit to his brother Ikedi.

Ikedi: Sister, welcome to my house.
Nkiruka: Ehen Ikedi, how are you and how is your health?

Ikedi: I am doing fine.
Nkiruka: No sign and symptoms of stroke again abi?

Ikedi: Not at all, no sign.
Nkiruka: Good. Ermmm, where are the children and where is your wife?

Ikedi: Have you forgotten that they are all in boarding school and the two elder ones who are in the university doesn’t like coming home until they are broke.

Nkiruka: Smiling ‘that is good to hear, What about your wife and Obiechina?’

Ifedi: Oh! You mean ifeoma he asked sitting by her side.

Nkiruka: Yes I mean her.
Ifedi: She went to her shop in the market. You know she has a provision store there.

Nkiruka: Okay. Anyway. That is good because I came to see you.

Ifedi: What is wrong, hope no problem this one you came to see me.

Nkiruka: No problem ooo. it is just that I was wondering if you are ever thinking of having more children.

Ifedi: What do you mean if I am thinking of having more children?

Nkiruka: Don’t you want to have more children?

Ifedi: I haven’t thought of that.
Nkiruka: Why if I may ask?
Ifedi: What do you mean why? I don’t want to have any more because I am too old to be a father at my age.

Nkiruka: Says who? Is it not your mate that are getting married?

Ifedi: Thank God you said getting married and not giving birth.

Nkiruka: Is it not your mate that are getting married and giving birth?

Ifedi: Look sister, I am too old and Obiechina is okay for me at the moment.

Nkiruka: Mba nu, I cannot and will not accept that. I want you to have more children.

Ifedi: I have five children from my wife already and obiechina my biological child. What else do you want me to have?

Nkiruka: Another child from your loins Ikedi, Another child! Is it a bad thing to wish for another child?

Ifedi: It is not and not a bad idea but right now, I just can’t.

Nkiruka: And why is that so?
Ifedi: Because my wife may not be in support. I know how difficult it was for me to convince her to allow a surrogate carry our child.

Nkiruka: And what is wrong if you do that this time?

Ifedi: Sister Please, Obiechina is okay for me.

Nkiruka: Look at you, do you think Mama will be happy that all you could do for her, is give her only one child?

Ifedi: Please don’t start.
Nkiruka: Don’t start what? When we were running and chasing you with different beautiful women to marry did you agree?

No! What you were busy doing was going to club and chasing anything on skirt. You couldn’t even produce one and what was the reason? That I cannot have a child outside marriage ‘she said mimicking him’ the useless woman you finally settled down with, robbed you of all your wealth and everything you had. You were in a vegetable state when she left but I still took pity on you as my brother, I sold all I had to make sure you
are here today.

Ikedi: What is it na? Why are you telling me the story of my life?

Nkiruka: Because I need to remind you of who you are and the reason why you need more children.

Ikedi: Is that why you have to tell me the story of my life.

Nkiruka: Yes ikedi, Yes! Look here Ikedi, all your friends left you to die but your family stayed behind. If you get old and sick, I may not be there, your niece and nephew may also not be there not even your step children but your own child from your loins will always be there for
you.

Ikedi: That is why I have Obiechina na.
Nkiruka: and I said he isn’t enough. The earlier you start thinking about it, the better for you and us all. I have said my own and it is up to you to take it or live it. Afterall, you are an adult.

Ikedi: But I do not have the money to go through the process all over again and what if my wife has reached menopause?

Nkiruka: You simply have another woman to do it for you for you are still a man and you still have some strength left in you to pregnant another woman don’t you?

Ikedi: I wouldn’t want to have an affair with another.

Nkiruka: I am not asking you to. All I am saying is that you can still use another woman’s egg but your sperm is what will use to fertilize her eggs.

Ikedi: My wife may be against it.
Nkiruka: it is your duty to make her understand.

Ikedi: Hmmm, I will think about it and talk to her about it.

Nkiruka: You better do for time is no longer on your side.

Ikedi: Hmmmm.

Episode 11

Ikedi: Hmmm.
Ifeoma: What’s hmmm?
Ikedi: Nothing really. Ermmm how old are you again?

Ifeoma: I am forty five years old.
Ikedi: can I say something please
Ifeoma: Go ahead Please.
Ikedi: would you like to have more kids.

Ifeoma: Lol….Hmmm. Why are you asking me all these questions?

Ikedi: Because I would like to marry you and I want you to have my kids if you would want to be my wife.

Ifeoma: I am not sure I want to get married again. Wait a minute, are you asking me to marry you?

Ikedi: Yes I am.
Ifeoma: I am not sure I want to.
Ikedi: Why?
Ifeoma: Because I do not want to.

Ikedi: Please Ifeoma, I want you to be my wife.
Ifeoma: I can’t.

Ikedi: because of your kids or what?
Ifeoma: Because I do not know you or if you are serious and it is too sudden for you to ask that of me.

Ikedi: If you want time. I will give you time and we can get to know each other. I just want us to get married and you bear my name and have kids for me.

Ifeoma: What makes you think I would want to have kids for you after I have had five children?

Ikedi: because I would want one of my own. Listen Ifeoma, I am simply telling you what I want from you and from us.

Ifeoma: I do not want to go through the stress of child bearing and besides, I am forty five years old, and don’t you think I am too old for that?

Ikedi: Please Ifeoma, I am asking you this, from a desperate heart.

Please, just give me this one request.
Ifeoma: Hmmm, I will think about it but I am not promising. We can also opt for a surrogate for you.

Ikedi: Just think about it carefully before we go ahead with all other available options.

Ifeoma: I will.

Few months later, Ifeoma and Ikedi tied the knot in Ikoyi registry where they were pronounced man and wife.

Ifeoma lived with her five children together with her husband in the same house. Ikedi loved her children like it was his own but he still wanted one from his own loins and decided to talk to his wife about it.

Ikedi: Ifeoma, I need you to carry my child.

Ifeoma: Are you still bent on me carrying your own child.

Ikedi: of course I am. I am not getting any younger and would really want a child of my own.

Ifeoma: You know that I am too old for childbearing; I really do not want anything to happen to me because I cannot live my children alone in this world.

Ikedi: How does you carrying my own child means you are going to leave this world?

Ifeoma: it is dangerous and we cannot afford the cost when anything goes wrong. Why don’t we involve a surrogate in this matter?

Ikedi: Why would I want to involve a surrogate?

Ifeoma: My body is too weak but a surrogate can use my egg and your
sperm. All she has to do is carry the child for nine months.

Ikedi: Hmmm.
Ifeoma: That is the only option left ooo but before that, we have to visit the doctor to find out if my eggs can still be used and that is if I have any eggs left sef.

Ikedi: What do you mean? Have you stopped seeing your period?

Ifeoma: No I haven’t but just because I haven’t doesn’t mean that I can produce. Let’s see the doctor before any conclusion is made.

Ikedi: Alright.

Ikedi and ifeoma went to see the doctor and it was confirmed that ifeoma can still carry a child of which she preferred using a surrogate to go through all that for her and it was decided by Ikedi to use a Ikedigate.

Ikedi took his wife abroad through the help of his beloved sister Nkiruka who financed all the expenses and also paid for a surrogate to carry his brother child. Nine Months later, the surrogate gave birth to a bouncing baby boy.

Ikedi was happy and overjoyed at the news for it seems he has waited all his whole life just to have a child and a child he finally has. He named the child Obiechina for his Lineage will never close ever again.

Two Years Later , Obiechina grew to be a very quiet and handsome boy who was so loved by his parents but Ifeoma noticed something different about her child.

Ifeoma: ‘Ikedi, I think our child needs medical attention’ she said when they were alone in their room

Ikedi: What do you mean by our child needs medical attention?

Ifeoma: He is unlike my five children. Looking at Obiechina, I think something is wrong with him.

Ikedi: What do you think is wrong with him?

Ifeoma: I really do not know yet, that is why I said let us take him to the doctor first to confirm if he is medically okay.

Ikedi: How can you take a child to the hospital when you can’t fathom out what is wrong with him?

Ifeoma: Ikedi, look at Obiechinna, does he look okay to you?

Ikedi: He does, I do not see anything wrong with him.

Ifeoma: You are so very wrong, our son is two years old yet has never called me Mom properly and neither has he ever called you Dad, when all other children can say a few words his age.

Episode 10

Ikedi’s family came around after Oluchi left and took over with taking care of him. His bosom friend’s Ekene and Chidera cut all ties with him for they didn’t want to have anything to do with with him ever again. Nkiruka was the only person who solely took over the responsibility of seeing that his little brother gets better again and she used all her resources to send him to india of which he spent one year six months there. When he came back, he came back better and despair.

Nkiruka: Now that you are back to Nigeria, it is time you put the pieces of your life together.

Ikedi: ‘Hmmmm’ he sobered’
Nkiruka: What is hmmm again?

Ikedi: Nothing, it’s just that I do not know how or where to begin Nkiruka: you have to start from somewhere.

Ikedi: I can’t think of anything right now.
Nkiruka: You have to, you have to man up, accept your loss and move on.

Ikedi: How can I do that when I lost everything. I don’t even have anything left of me. I don’t even have a child of my own.

Nkiruka: Eh!Eh! I don’t want to hear that right now, it is never too late.

Ikedi: How? Having a child in this old age is or was never my plan.

Nkiruka: What do you mean?
Ikedi: I am sixty years old and I have nothing to my name. Who would want to have a child for me right now. If I was rich, maybe I would have opted for a baby mama but I am no longer the Ikedi of yesteryears.

Nkiruka: Put yourself together and stop talking nonsense, you will find a woman who will bear a child for you. All you have to do right now is remain positive no matter what life throws at you.

Ikedi: I pray. All I can do now is hope ooo.
Nkiruka: your ex -wife was wicked but she still had pity on you by leaving the house deeds and one of your filling stations to you, that you should be grateful for.

Ikedi: Hmmm, What a life!
And that was how Ikedi continued his search for a woman to call his own again or altleast a woman who would bear him a child. He dated both young and old but none wanted to have any long relationship with him for he was not their spec.

He met Chioma, Chinenye, Chigozie but they all turned down his request concerning bearing a child for him or even marrying him for he was old and not as rich as he used to be because the filling station he had was not earning him the kind of money he expected.

After searching and searching, he gave up on women and decided to devote his time and energy in doing the things of God.

Nkiruka: Ikedi, this one you are now going to church every day, what is happening?

Ikedi: Sister, what can I do? Since I have no one or nothing, I decided to devote my time to God ooo.

Nkiruka: I am happy for you oooo but please do not give up hope.

God is still under the throne.
Ikedi: Amen.
Ikedi never relented in his service to God, he kept his hope and faith alive till one day, on his way to church he met a beautiful lady who was also hurrying to church for they were trekking.

Ikedi: Hello, are you going to my direction?

Ifeoma: Which direction are you going?
Ikedi: I am going to Holy Centre Ministry. Is that where you worship?

Ifeoma: Yes that is where I am worshipping; you know we are already
late?

Ikedi: ‘Yes I do. C’mon, let us walk together’ and together they walked down to church. After church service, Ikedi met with her again and asked for her name. He also collected her number and requested for his permission to keep calling her and she obliged.

Ifeoma: ‘This one you called me out here today’ she said for Ikedi pleaded with her to meet him in a restaurant.

Ikedi: I am sorry if I called you out at the wrong time.

Ifeoma: No problem. What is it you wanted to discuss with me?

Ikedi: Nothing much, just want to get to know you better.

Ifeoma: Why is that? Aren’t you a married man?

Ikedi: No, I am not.
Ifeoma: What do you mean you are not? Haven’t you ever married before?
Ikedi: I have but she left me.
Ifeoma: Wow! Sorry to hear about that.
Ikedi: It is in the past now.

I feoma : I understand, I have been there before.

Ikedi: Are you married?
Ifeoma: Yes I am but I am now a widow.
Ikedi: Wow! I am sorry
Ifeoma: it’s no problem really.
Ikedi: When did he die and what killed him?

Ifeoma: He died two years ago and he was involved in an accident.

Ikedi: So sorry to hear about that.
Ifeoma: I am doing just fine by his grace.
Ikedi: Any kids yet?

Ifeoma: Yes, five kids.

After two years of focusing and caring for her husband, Oluchi became frustrated.

He wasn’t improving and his been away from his business was beginning to affect them financially.

Oluchi: ‘Take a look at your financial statement for the past three months’ she said to ikedi who was on a wheelchair watching the football league that was going on.

Ikedi: Though he could not talk out loud for he was still down with the partial stroke which affected his right side but he understood very well what is happening and also understood that all his businesses has been suffering the past years because he is unstable. Ikedi: Nodded and said ‘Yes’.

Oluchi: Called his lawyer and in a few minutes, he lawyer arrived.

Another two years down the line, Oluchi never gave a care in the world about her husband or his health, Effort by his family members to take him away from her and send him abroad for a better treatment proved negative. He became a vegetable but with the help of the cook in the
house, they were able to do little for him when Oluchi is not around.

Ikedi became a shadow of himself and lost all hope in life. The child he wanted and desperately needed,he is sure he will never have again concerning his present condition.

One Morning, Oluchi woke up, got dressed and went to his room. She
looked at him and for the first time felt pity on him but she has made up her mind concerning what she is about to do and there is no going back.

Oluchi: I want to talk to you about something very important Ikedi.

Ikedi: ‘Good’ he mumbled ‘I also want to talk to you’.

Oluchi: Okay, she sat down on the cushion close to the bed and said
‘What is it that you want to talk to me about?

Ikedi: I know that for the past five years, I haven’t been the best husband to you, I know that you really need a man who is stable and tot in a vegetable state like I am. You need a strong and healthy man
who will give you children and….

Oluchi: and what?
Ikedi: If you do not want this marriage, I can understand you.

Oluchi: Okay… so what do you mean now?

Ikedi: Stop treating me like I am a nobody and allow my people access to my house.

Oluchi: Our house you mean?
Ikedi: Oluchi, you have been unfair to me these past few years and I haven’t said anything about it. I know that you have squandered all my hard earned money and you still keep doing that. I also know that you married me for my riches and nothing else.

Oluchi: Go straight to the point na. what is all this mumble about?

Ikedi: I want you to handle everything concerning my wealth and company to my family.

Oluchi: Hahahaha…. Hahahaahahaa. What do you mean you want me to handle everything to your family?

Ikedi: Everything concerning my businesses which I signed to you, I
want you to handle everything to them. you didn’t give me a child and so you are at no liberty to anything.

Oluchi: Really? Have you forgotten that whatever you have is also mine?

Ikedi: I know that but you do not know how to manage them.

Oluchi: Manage ke! Anyway, that won’t be possible.

Ikedi: Why? But they are still mine.
Oluchi: They were yours but the moment you signed everything to me, they became mine.

Ikedi: Just handle everything to them please.

Oluchi: I said that won’t be possible.
Ikedi: Why?

Oluchi: Because I sold all your companies, all of it.

Ikedi: You did what?
Oluchi: I said I sold them.
Ikedi: What have you done?

Oluchi: What I should have done a long time ago. See eh! as you see me so, I am on my way to the airport for I am leaving the country for good.

You can as well call your people to come and take over the process of taking care of you because as for me, I do not want to remain married to you anymore.

Ikedi: Why do you hate me so much? what did I do to you to deserve
all this?

Oluchi: You didn’t do me anything ooo. My compensation of staying with you all these while was all your money I got which Is fair enough.

Ikedi: Why are you doing all this?
Oluchi: Doing what? I didn’t do anything ooo, I only took what is mine.

Ikedi: You have taken away everything from me, you have taken away all my hard earned sweat and money.

Oluchi: ‘Because that was what i wanted in the first place. You are a good man, you will find another woman, Goodbye’. She said as she walked away leaving Ikedi wishing he never met her for she was his biggest mistake.

Episode 8

Ikedi: But we just came back from Dubai a week ago.

Oluchi: We! Thank God you said we. I didn’t go alone because you were with me every single day of my stay there.

This time around, I want to go alone and enjoy myself with my friends.

Ikedi: Alright, how much do you need for your trip?

Oluchi: Twenty million naira.

Ikedi: Twenty million naira, Hmmm. What do you need that kind of money for?

Oluchi: For travelling and other expenses.
Ikedi: Alright. Just tell me when you need it and I will sign the cheque. When you return, we will go for the check- up.

Oluchi: That is okay by me.

When she returned back from her trip to London, Ikedi and Oluchi went to visit their doctor who certified them medically okay and told them to be patient for God’s time.

Ikedi: ‘Don’t you think we should try IVF’ he said when they returned home from the hospital.

Oluchi: IVF ke! Why would I want to try IVF when there is nothing wrong with the both of us? Me, I am not ready to do that ooo.

Ikedi: Why are you so less concerned about having a child?

Oluchi: What do you mean I am less concerned?

Ikedi: You do not care when it comes to having a child. Anytime I ringg up the topic you feel less concerned, why? I seem not to understand how you can be so carefree concerning this issue that
involves us having more children.

Oluchi: Why do I need to kill myself when our marriage is barely five years? If it was six years or five years, I would have been more than worried but since it is still early why should I be? M , I don’t like the
way you are going about this issue, give it time please. You will have sids soon.

Ikedi: I just cannot wait any longer.

Oluchi: Well, there is nothing you, I or anybody can do about it ooo. If you keep thinking and disturbing yourself about it, it will affect your health oooo.

After five years with nothing to show for it, Ikedi became frustrated and desperate. Oluchi refusal to try IVF made Ikedi wonder why his wife doesn’t want to try for a child using other means and with that, he started having affairs outside his home and still the same result.

The women he had affairs with refused to have or carry any child for him, he became so frustrated with life that his started deteriorating.

One day, he came back from home, so angry and frustrated; he decided to talk to his wife about it again.

Ikedi: ‘Oluchi’ he said as he stormed to her bedroom with anger ‘I think I would need to marry a second wife since you cannot carry a child for me.

Oluchi: You would what?

Ikedi: Marry a second wife.
Oluchi: So after seeing a lot of women and committing adultery outside, you want to take a second wife?

Ikedi: Yes! Since you cannot carry a child for me and you feel less concerned, I will want to take a second wife.

Oluchi: Never, not while I am still married to you.

Ikedi: I have made my decision and there is nothing you or anyone can do about it.
Oluchi: Ikedi, Mba nu, not while I am still in this house and I am legally married to you.

Ikedi: I am not getting married to her legally, I am getting married to her traditionally and I was hoping that you will understand.

Oluchi: I said you are not allowed to marry a second wife.

Ikedi: Then give me a child.

Oluchi: ‘Am I the one that will pregnant myself’ she shouted ‘are you man enough because if you are, I would have been pregnant by now’.

Ikedi: ‘How dare you’ he raised his hands to slap her but held his head ‘My….My…. he collapsed on the ground’.

Oluchi: ‘Hey, Ikedi’ she screamed as he collapsed on the floor ‘What is wrong with you? ‘Hey! Help’ she screamed ‘Ikedi! Ikedi! Ikedi! She screamed for help and with the help of the maid and the drivers, Ikedi was rushed to the hospital.

After several hours waiting in the hospital trying to know what is wrong with her husband from the doctor, he attended to them when they have diagnosed what is wrong with him and informed his wife about his condition.

Oluchi: ‘What is wrong with my husband’ she asked as he ushered her into his office.

Doctor: I am sorry madame but you will have to brace up for there are a lot to be done now that your husband is in a critical condition.

Oluchi: What do you mean doctor?
Doctor: You see as a result of stress, the blood that flows in the brain wasn’t flowing as it used to and as result, due to stress and lack of rest, he is in a critical condition and will need some time to come around.

Oluchi: Doctor, what is wrong with him and will he be fine?

Doctor: Of course he will be fine but he will need enough rest and attention. He will also need enough love and support from his family.

Oluchi: Okay Doctor, how long will it take for him to be whole again?

Doctor: it depends on individual and the effort put in trying to see him get better.
Oluchi: What do you mean doctor?

Doctor: What I mean is that he will get better but it might take some time.

Oluchi: How long are we talking about here?

Doctor: Ermmmm, it could take days, weeks, months or even years.

Like I said before, it depends on the amount of effort put into seeing that he recovers quickly.

Oluchi: Oh My God! I am finished. What do I do now?

Doctor: Take it easy Madame. Please! All will be fine.

Oluchi: Hmmm, I am finished…. Ermmmm, Doctor, what is wrong with
my husband again?

Chukwuma: What do you mean?

Oluchi: It means that from hence forth, your right now belong to my husband and my husband alone.

Chukwuma: When did this one start?
Oluchi: The day we got married legally.

Chukwuma: I knew it! I knew it! I knew that when you marry that old fool you will change towards me, didn’t I say so?

Oluchi: That old fool is my husband, that old fool is the same old fool that I collect money from to give you. Arent you ashamed of yourself sef? I collect money other men give to me and give you and yet you still call my husband old fool in my presence, I don’t blame you, it is
because I am here in your house else, It would have been the opposite.

Chukwuma: Errrmmm, okay sorry for calling him that but you denying me my right is not also good. Check it out na, since you married, I have not had a piece of you.

Oluchi: If that is the case, if you cannot hold body till a few more years then I suggest we call it off.

Chukwuma: Did you just say a few more years?

Oluchi: ‘Yes I did. You don’t expect me to be sleeping around with you when I am still married to Ikedi do you’ she waited for him to reply and since he didn’t she added ‘well, as long as I remained married to him, I am not going to sleep with you. I have a conscience abeg or do you think all women are evil?

Chukwuma: But this is not right na. At least consider me a little.

Oluchi: The only consideration you have now is what I am giving you soon that is you leaving the country as soon as possible. I will take care of your bills and after some months, in the U.S you should be able to stand on your feet for I won’t keep on baby- sitting you. Your days of
me looking out for you is over.

Chukwuma: How can you say all this to me, didn’t you say you will love me till your dying days?

Oluchi: That was then, not now. I have better things and bigger fish to catch.

Chukwuma: You can’t be serious; you can’t just tell me that. Who do you think you are?

Oluchi: ‘I am Oluchi, the wife to Ikedi. What can you do about it’ she asked looking at him straight in the eyes ‘Listen Chukwuma, My days of playing games with you is now over. The reason I came here is to make sure that I see you are well taken care of.

Process your Visa with the money that I give you and when you are ready to live the country, I will transfer a huge amount of money which will last you for a few months and after that, our deal is done and our paths in each other’s life will be over.

Chukwuma: You can’t do that to me, you can’t just push me away. I
won’t accept it.

Oluchi: What will you do Chukwuma, tell my husband the truth? if you do that, then I will expose you to the world.

Chukwuma: What do you have against me that you will expose?

Oluchi: Hmmm, do not dare me! I am warning you.

Chukwuma: What do you have against me, say it na.

Oluchi: Evidence that you were the one that masterminded the kidnapping of the late two commissioner’s son and also evidence that you were the brain behind the robbery that went on in Zlico Bank few months back.

Chukwuma: Shocked at how much she knew about him and yet have nothing against her he said ‘how did you know all this?’

Oluchi: ‘Because I have been watching your every move since you came my way. Now you are going to be a good boy and do as I say, get the visa ready and fuck the hell out of my life. Am I clear’ she
shouted.

Chukwuma: Yes!
Oluchi: I didn’t hear that.
Chukwuma: Yes! He shouted.

Oluchi: ‘Good boy, that’s more like it’ she looked at him, smiled and walked away but not without saying ‘I will keep watch over you, here ndd anywhere you deem it fit. If any harm comes to me Chukwuma, I will make you pay. Don’t underestimate me, be warned!
***
After few months, Ikedi became worried that Oluchi isn’t showing any sign of pregnancy. Every night, he goes to her room to perform his duty but no result is forth coming. He decided to talk to his wife about it.

Ikedi: Oluchi, I want us to discuss something important.

Oluchi: What is it? I also wanted to discuss something with you tomorrow but since you are here, maybe we can discuss it today then

Ikedi: knew whatever his wife wanted to discuss with him was money related and decided to speak up first ‘Arent you worried about the fact that no child yet?

Oluchi: Worried ke! How can I be worried when my marriage isn’t up to five years? Besides, am I God that gives children? Am I also the one that will impregnate myself?

Ikedi: So you are not worried?

Oluchi: ‘No I am not’ she said as a matter of fact.

Ikedi: If that is the case, then I am.
Oluchi: It is normal for you to be worried na. you are fifty plus and you do not have any children. I can understand your plight.

Ikedi: Oluchi it is time you take this issue serious.

Oluchi: How serious do you want me to take it again? What do you want me to do?

Ikedi: I want us to visit the hospital.
Oluchi: Will visiting the hospital solve our problem?

Ikedi: At least, let us be checked and be certified okay then we know the next step to take.

Oluchi: I am okay oooo. The problem is not from me. Maybe it is even you sef.

Ikedi: Whatever, let us just visit the hospital and let us be checked first.

Oluchi: Alright but it won’t be this week.
Ikedi: When will it be?

Oluchi: When I return from London. That was what I wanted to discuss with you. I want to travel to London and will need money for that.

Episode 6

Chukwuma: I love you.
Oluchi: ‘I love you too’ she said and hugged the man who has been there for her since her parents died.

Chukwuma: So what now?

Oluchi: I will marry Ikedi.

Chukwuma: What happens after that?
Oluchi: I will be his wife and from there, we do what need to be done.

Chukwuma: What do you mean?

Oluchi: it means that when I become Mrs Ikedi, your status will change. You will no longer have to beg or look for a job.

Chukwuma: Hope you won’t abandon me after that and hope you won’t get pregnant for him. I do not want you to take in for him.

Oluchi: I don’t intend to. All I intend to do is be his wife and then everything will fall in place.

Chukwuma: If that is what you want, who am I to say no?

Oluchi: Thanks Darling.

One month later, Oluchi and Ikedi got married in the registry. After three weeks, Ikedi was tensed for he wanted his wife to be pregnant as soon as possible but that was not what Oluchi had in mind.

One evening, Ikedi went to perform his matrimonial duties to his wife in her room for in the beginning she has been against sharing the same room with her husband except when they need one another that they can go over to the “others room” and Ikedi obliged.

Oluchi: Is it everytime that you will be coming to my room? Don’t you nkink that as a woman, I am supposed to have time to myself?

Ikedi: What time do you want to have to yourself if not with your
husband?

Oluchi: I do not want you in my room. I am tired and need some break from sex.

Ikedi: I need you to get pregnant for me as soon as possible; you know that I am no more getting any younger.

Oluchi: it is too early for you to start expecting me to take in. Give it
some time.

Ikedi: And that is the more reason why I need to keep planting my seed inside you.

Oluchi: Ikedi, the one you have planted these past days is enough. It is not by planting seed upon seed inside. Allow me na.

Ikedi: Okay, not tonight since you want to be left alone but I want to start seeing result immediately.

Oluchi: You will Ikedi, just give it time. By the way, aren’t you supposed to give me money for shopping? My clothes are worn out and I need a new set of cloths. I also need you to open a business of my own for me.

Ikedi: How much do you need for the shopping?

Oluchi: Five million naira will do.

Ikedi: the business will be opened when you give me an heir to all my wealth be it male or female, I don’t mind.

Oluchi: Ah! But why? Why can’t I have a business of my own?

Ikedi: Because I do not want anything to interfere with you having a child for me.

Oluchi: I cannot believe this, so you mean all I will be doing is waiting on you to put your seed inside me and wait for it to geminate?

Ikedi: Yes.

Oluchi: it cannot work ooo, it cannot work.

Ikedi: What do you need money for when anything you want you can have.

Oluchi: It does not matter; I still need my own business.

Ikedi: Give me a child and you can have much more than just one business of yours.

After the discussion Oluchi had with her husband, she decided to let him have his way and he signed the check of five million naira for her.

The following day,When Ikedi left the house, she carried her purse and drove herself to chukwuma’s house.

Chukwuma: Oluchi, why are you here? I thought you said we won’t be seeing each other very soon.

Oluchi: Aren’t you missing me? She asked for she was wondering why he asked her that question.

Chukwuma: Why won’t I miss you? But I thought you said we won’t be seeing each other as usual?

Oluchi: She waved his statement with her hands and said ‘here, take this’ Chukwuma: Collecting the cheque said ‘What is this?’

Oluchi: It is Five million naira that I just collected from my husband.

Chuwuma: Five million naira cheque ! Wow! Just like that?

Oluchi : Yes na, what am i his wife for ?
Chukwuma: This is nice oooo.

Oluchi: I need you to cash that money and start processing your visa to the U.S immediately.

Chukwuma: ‘Wow! My baby, now you are talking. Five million naira just to process Visa? Hehehehe, I have arrived oooo. It is time to shame the devil’ he said smiling.

Oluchi: picked up her purse from the bed and said ‘I have to start going, I do not want my husband to know that I left the house’.

Chukwuma: ‘Bia Oluchi, Bia godu biko’ he said ‘now that you are here, won’t you give me my right?
