Tribhanga featuring Kajol, Tanvi Azmi and Mithila Palkar promises to be an impactful film about imperfect relationships shared between a mother and her daughter. Directed by Renuka Sahane, the film is going to be Kajol’s digital debut. It is produced by Ajay Devgn, Bannijay Asia and Siddharth P Malhotra.

The film’s cast which is a combination of fresh and seasoned talents sets higher expectations. Little Things‘ fame Mithila Palkar who also won a Filmfare award for the web series is seen essaying one of the three pivotal roles. Apart from the female cast, Kunal Roy Kapur, Kawaljit Singh and Vaibhav Tatwawaadi are also known to be part of the film.

As the trailer opens, Kajol introduces the three woman in her family including herself. She calls her writer mother, Nayan (Tanvi Azmi) ‘Abhanga’ meaning a weird genius, her daughter Masha (Mithila Palkar) ‘Samabhanga’ perfectly balanced and calls herself ‘Tribhanga’ an Odissi dance pose which is said to be asymmetrical yet beautiful.

Anu (Kajol), a famous Odissi dance performer is seen to be dealing with a traumatic past which according to her is her mother’s fault. The anger and hatred in her towards her mother doesn’t stop her from being empathetic towards her mother. Nayan goes into a comma and that seems to be the moment when the dysfunctional family starts to accept its imperfect members.

Masha, Anu’s daughter speaks of her mother as a tigress.  The three generations of women are seen to be tackling their issues along while manoeuvring the familial complications. The trailer also hints at physical abuse. We should wait for the film’s release to see how the film deals with such a sensitive subject.

Tribhanga is also an Odissi dance pose which is said to be asymmetrical and yet breathtaking. That is the metaphor used in the film. Lately, there has been a rise in female-led films on OTT platforms and cinema halls but the right treatment of female characters is hardly achieved. Tribhanga which focuses on a family with mostly female members makes it a point to neither turn women into deities nor villains. It is about the grey shade found in every individual.

The film will release on Netflix on January 15. Watch the trailer here:
