Family that died after eating Amala in Osun were poisoned by their daughter's jilted ex -boyfriend.

Homicide detectives from Osun State Police Command have arrested one Rasaq for allegedly poisoning five family members at Ibokun, in Obokun Local Government area of Osun State. According to residents, Rasaq, angry at being jilted by his lover, Esther, decided to poison their yam flour, used in making amala.

In the process, he killed Esther and four other family members, including Esther’s mother.


The tragic and shocking incident was said to have occurred at the weekend. Our correspondent gathered that the remains of those that died had been deposited at the Wesley Guild, Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ilesha. When the incident happened, their neighbours, rather than rushing the groaning victims to hospital, ran to alert traditional healers.

All efforts to save them, however, failed. Rasaq, a commercial bike rider, was alleged to have poisoned the yam flour in the house of his love, simply called Esther, after she jilted him. Sources said: “Rasaq conspired with one of Esther’s female friends to poison the food meant for the whole family.

After eating the food, Esther and her mother, Mrs. Kehinde Fasanya, who was a worker of Obokun Local Government died instantly.”

The Osun State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Rafiu Isamotu, said: “Two out of the four persons that we took to Wesley Guild Hospital in Ilesa could not make it.

They are dead. Four persons lost their lives so far to the best of my knowledge. I have not been told about the death of any of the remaining two persons.” The Osun State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fimihan Adeoye, hinted that Razak had been arrested by the police and presently being quizzed over the untoward incident.
