Suspected Fulani herdsmen attacked four villages in Benue State's Gwer-West local government area, killing five people.

Three other people were reportedly injured in the attack, which occurred in the early hours of Friday, April 30. One of them was a pregnant woman, according to reports.

After troops from Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) pursued them to the Benue-Nasarawa border and engaged them in a gun duel, the armed herdsmen were said to have escaped with gunshot wounds.

According to sources, the herdsmen first attacked Ahume Village along the Makurdi/Naka Road, but were driven back by troops deployed at the village to fend off an invasion.

While the troops were patrolling the Ahume community, the herdsmen went further to Tse-Nyarei Village and began shooting in all directions, killing five people and injuring others, including a pregnant woman, according to one of the natives, Fidelis.

Security services have recovered five bodies so far, according to the native, while three others, including a pregnant woman, were rescued alive with serious gunshot wounds, while many others are still missing.

According to Fidelis, the dead bodies have been cleared, and the injured have been taken to a hospital for treatment.

"Herdsmen attacked Ahume village along the Makurdi-Naka route, according to a distress call." "When troops in Kula village were warned, the bandits fled to Tse Nyarei, where they murdered three people," he said.

"A large number of people were hurt." The soldiers pursued the bandits and confronted them on the riverbank on the border between Benue and Nasarawa States, where they exchanged gunfire. They, on the other hand, crossed the river and fled to Nasarawa State.”
