Starboy Wizkid has become the fourth Nigerian to win the Artiste of the Year award at the annual MTV Africa Music Awards.
Other Nigerian musicians that have won the award in the past include D’banj (2008 and 2009), 2face Idibia (2010), and Davido (2014).
Pop duo Peter and Paul Okoye of P-Square were awarded Artiste of the Decade at last year’s MAMAs.
Wizkid is the biggest winner at the 2016 MTV Africa Music Awards that held on Saturday October 22 at the Ticketpro Dome in Johannesburg, South Africa co-hosted by Bonang Matheba and co-hosted by Yemi Alade and Nomzamo Mbatha.
The singer, who performed ‘Ojuelegba’ live on stage, took home three awards; Best Male Act, Artiste of the Year, and another credit for his feature on ‘Soweto Baby’ by DJ Maphorisa.
‘I wanna say a big thank you to God, fans and Family,’ Wizkid said as he picked up his award.
Yemi Alade also won Best Female Act for second consecutive year at the 2016 MAMAs.
Patoranking was awarded Song of the Year for ‘My Woman’, while ‘Pana’ hitmaker, Tekno went home with the Best New Act award.
