The development came after South Africa and Nigeria's 9th Bi-National Commission in Pretoria, South Africa. Bi-National Commission has been elevated to the level of heads of state. A statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity Garba Shehu revealed that the decision is to foster stronger ties between both countries. The meeting was the first time President Muhammadu Buhari and Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa will preside since the Bi-National Commission was elevated. Also, the two nations agreed to re-establish the consular forum – a structured arrangement where both governments meet regularly – not less than twice in a year, to discuss the welfare of citizens. Similarly, the Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs Geoffrey Onyeama and South African Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Naledi Pandor, signed the minutes of the 9th session of Bi-National Commission.
