Since struggling state utility Eskom announced on Tuesday that it would implement its worst-ever outages until further notice, power outages have worsened. In Africa's most industrialized nation, the power outages impede economic expansion and are a major source of public dissatisfaction with the ANC. Vincent Magwenya, the presidential spokesman, stated, "The President is currently convening a meeting with leaders of political parties represented in parliament, NECCOM (National Energy Crisis Committee), and the Eskom board." He went on to say that additional briefings with important stakeholders will take place this week. The beleaguered utility provides the majority of South Africa's electricity by primarily relying on an aging fleet of coal-fired power plants that are unreliable and susceptible to problems.
