Hunter Biden, the son of President Biden, has had his finances scrutinized for years.

Following a five-year Justice Department investigation, the younger Biden agreed on Tuesday to a plea deal for two tax-related misdemeanors and a deferred prosecution agreement for a felony gun charge. If the deal is approved by a judge, he will probably not go to jail.

Additionally, a GOP-led congressional investigation into what House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer calls "shady business deals" involving the Biden family will be conducted against Hunter Biden.

The various investigations into the president's son are as follows:

Justice Department investigation Federal authorities, led by U.S. Attorney David Weiss, a Trump-era appointee, with the U.S. attorney's office in Delaware, had been investigating Hunter Biden since 2018, but the investigation was temporarily halted for several months prior to the 2020 presidential election.

Hunter Biden confirmed the investigation into Joe Biden's "tax affairs" in December 2020, shortly after Joe Biden's election to the presidency. Prosecutors have looked into whether he paid enough taxes on millions of dollars of his income, which included money from a number of business ventures he had overseas.

Prosecutors also looked into claims that Hunter Biden lied on a gun application form in 2018 about how much he used drugs, even though he later admitted that he was addicted to drugs at the time.

According to a previous report from ABC News, the younger Biden took out a loan of $2 million from Kevin Morris, his trusted lawyer, in order to pay back taxes, penalties, and liens that he owed to the IRS.

During the course of their investigation, a Delaware grand jury is said to have heard from a number of witnesses, including a woman who had a child with Hunter Biden out of wedlock and some of his business partners.

The younger Biden, a Yale-trained attorney, has stated that he is assisting investigators and remains "100% certain" that he will be found not guilty. There are no indications that the president is involved in any way in the federal investigation, and President Biden has stated that he and his son never discussed his foreign business dealings.

The White House has attempted to distance the president from the investigation numerous times.

Legislative oversight Meanwhile, House Republicans have been carrying out a long-awaited investigation into Hunter Biden and his father on Capitol Hill.

"an alleged criminal scheme involving then-Vice President Biden and a foreign national relating to the exchange of money for policy decisions," the powerful House Oversight Committee demanded in a subpoena to the FBI last month.

The unclassified FD-1023 document sought by the subpoena is typically defined as an informant's report. A variety of scenarios in which a person presents themselves as a "source" and makes claims of wrongdoing could result in the creation of an FD-1023 form.

The accusation was described by the White House as "anonymous innuendo."

ABC News was told by sources familiar with the situation that in April, a supervisor at the IRS told lawmakers that he had information that suggested the Biden administration might be handling the investigation into Hunter Biden incorrectly.

The IRS whistleblower's lawyer wrote to lawmakers, "would like to make protected whistleblower disclosures to Congress," in a letter obtained by ABC News. The letter stated that the IRS whistleblower's client was a criminal supervisory special agent "who has been overseeing the ongoing and sensitive investigation."

According to the letter, the disclosures "contradict sworn testimony to Congress by a senior political appointee," "implement failure to mitigate clear conflicts of interest in the ultimate disposition of the case," and "describe examples of preferential treatment and politics improperly infecting decisions and protocols that would normally be followed by career law enforcement professionals in similar circumstances if the subject were not politically connected." All three of these statements were made in reference to the case.

In response to the letter, Attorney General Merrick Garland stated that he stood by his testimony on Capitol Hill that the Hunter Biden investigation was free of any improper political interference.

Garland stated last month, "I stand by my testimony, and I refer you to the U.S. attorney for the District of Delaware," who is in charge of this case and is capable of making any decisions he deems appropriate.

After the election in November, House Oversight Committee Chairman Comer and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep. Jim Jordan pledged to "pursue all avenues" of wrongdoing and referred to investigations into the president's family as a "top priority."

Ex-Twitter executives testified in February before the Oversight Committee that the social media company erroneously prevented users from sharing a contentious 2020 New York Post article about Hunter Biden's laptop.

In a subsequent interview with PBS NewsHour, President Joe Biden dismissed the Oversight Committee's investigation.

He stated, "The public will not pay attention to that." It won't get very far if they can only fabricate information about my family.
