Steel doors are manufactured from strong steel. However, they are not entirely made of solid steel. In fact, a steel door is a polyurethane or polystyrene core coated with a thin skin of steel material.

They are commonly used for industrial and commercial purposes. But due to the safety and economic features of steel doors, they are also sometimes used for residential buildings.

This article discusses the essential features, advantages, and disadvantages of using steel doors for buildings.

Features of Steel Doors

Steel doors are not manufactured as solid steel as they are heavy and would wear off the hinges and frame.

The skin of steel doors uses steel with a gauge between 16 and 24.

Steel is a good conductor of heat and cold but the core material of steel doors acts as a thermal barrier.

Steel doors are five times better than other synthetic and wooden door materials with respect to thermal insulation.

Steel doors are installed mainly in interior areas that lead the way to the exterior. However, they can also be used in interior-to-interior spaces for security reasons.

Steel doors are shipped either as a factory-applied primer that can be painted with the desired color or as a PVC-colored skin layer that cannot be painted. Hence, it is advisable to choose the desired coating before making the final purchase.

Before purchasing a steel door, all the required cutouts must be planned and made before installation.

Advantages of Steel Doors

The major advantages of using steel doors in buildings are:

1. Steel doors are safer compared to other door materials. They are difficult to damage by an intruder. The steel skin is impervious to most attempts to damage.

2. Steel doors are fire-rated based on the requirements and standard building codes.

3. Steel doors are weatherproof.

4. They are strong and durable.

Disadvantages of Steel Doors

The major disadvantages of steel doors in buildings are:

1. Steel doors are heavy, and their installation is difficult.

2. Steel doors are prone to scratches or dents. These are difficult to correct and might require repainting or finishing.

3. It is difficult to make cutouts on steel doors.
