As seen in the new trailer that NEON just unveiled, “Memories of Murder” follows the shocking true story of South Korea’s first serial killer. While that case was recently in the news again, at the time of the film’s release, the identity of the killer was still unknown, making Bong Joon Ho’s feature even more compelling and creepy, as you tag along with detectives risking their minds and bodies to track down the elusive murderer.
And if your only experience with Director Bong is with “Parasite,” you’ll probably immediately notice that Song Kang-ho also stars in ‘Memories.’ In addition, he’s joined by Kim Sang-kyung as his partner in the hunt for the killer.
Bong Joon Ho may have won multiple Oscars, including Best Picture, for “Parasite,” but there are many film fans (especially some around these parts) that consider “Memories of Murder” the filmmaker’s finest achievement.
And since NEON understands Bong Joon Ho is a relatively new name for the mainstream public, the distributor is ready to unleash a digitally-remastered version of “Memories of Murder” this October, making the crime thriller one of the best films you can watch in theaters this fall, guaranteed.
The theatrical release of “
Memories of Murder” comes before The Criterion Collection is set to release a new special edition of the film on disc later this year. “
Memories of Murder” is set to arrive in select theaters on
October 19 and October 20, as a special two-night only event. The screenings will also include additional content and a Q&A between Edgar Wright and Bong Joon Ho.
MEMORIES OF MURDER tells the harrowing true story of the hunt for a sadistic serial rapist and murderer terrorizing a small province in 1980s South Korea. Marking the first of many successful collaborations between four-time Oscar winner Bong Joon Ho and leading man Song Kang Ho, the film follows the paths of three increasingly desperate detectives as they attempt to decipher the violent mind of a killer in a futile effort to solve the case. Now, seventeen years after its initial release, and a year after the real culprit was identified, this cult classic takes its place as a modern masterpiece.
