THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT is a new HBO Max series that covers a whole slew of genres and is definitely worth checking out. Kaley Cuoco stars in the title role and does an exceptional job.

A thriller-mystery of a plot that often turns very happy-go-lucky through comedy. However, do not be fooled, something sinister is always waiting right around the corner. Or in the corner of Cassie’s (Kaley Cuoco) mind. Not that she herself is sinister, but her past has a lot of dark moments. Including why she started drinking – and at what age!

Most people probably know (or know of) Kaley Cuoco for her role on the hit series The Big Bang Theory (2007-2019). Or, if you’re old enough, like me, the series 8 Simple Rules… for Dating My Teenage Daughter (2002-2005). Both series had Kaley Cuoco use her gift for comedy, which is also utilized perfectly in The Flight Attendant.

However, the role of Cassandra “Cassie” Bowden in this new HBO Max series, is perfect for Kaley Cuoco because she gets to use both her comedic timing and show a much more serious side as well. Almost like Christina Applegate who started off in Married With Children and is currently kicking ass as one of the stars of the Netflix series Dead to Me. A series that also mixes genres.

Co-starring with Kaley Cuoco is Michiel Huisman as “Alex”. And while Alex is the person that Cassie (Kaley Cuoco) wakes up next to and finds him brutally murdered, he is still a big part of this series. Mostly due to him living on in Cassie’s mind and she tries to piece together the events of the evening and night, they spent together before she woke up next to his dead body.

It might sound a little weird, but it makes perfect sense when you watch it and works really well.

Michiel Huisman still might not be a familiar name to many, but you should recognize his face. He was one of the Crain siblings in Mike Flanagan’s brilliant Netflix series The Haunting of Hill House. Also, he was on Game of Thrones and Orphan Black as well as co-starred in the hugely underrated The Invitation by Karyn Kusama.

This series does have quite a lot of interesting characters. Cassie (Kaley Cuoco) is definitely the main character, but she has a lot of characters in orbit around her. These include her brother, who is portrayed by T.R. Knight (11.22.63, Grey’s Anatomy). Also, Zosia Mamet (Girls) plays her best friend, who also happens to be a fierce defense attorney.

Rosie Perez (Birds of Prey, The Dead Don’t Die) plays Cassie’s colleague, which means she’s also a flight attendant. One of the shortest I’ve ever encountered, but her personality clearly makes up for this. She is mesmerizing as always and has a lot more to her than first meets the eye.

Also, the ever-intriguing Michelle Gomez plays an all-important role on The Flight Attendant. You’ll see her early on in small ways, but she will come to the forefront soon enough. You’ll probably know Michelle Gomez as Madam Satan herself on Chilling Adventures of Sabrina on Netflix. Or maybe as Missy from Doctor Who.

In another key role, we see Nolan Gerard Funk (Truth or Dare), Colin Woodell (Searching, The Purge TV series), and Audrey Grace Marshall (Jessica Jones).

Watch The Flight Attendant series on HBO Max

The Flight Attendant series is based on the novel “The Flight Attendant” by Chris Bohjalian. Steve Yockey is the creator of the series and he has experience from several series already. He worked as a writer on both Scream: The TV Series and Supernatural. Also, he was a producer on Supernatural just as he is on this HBO Max production.

This series might sound like a strange genre hybrid, but it actually works really well. The way in which this story is told reminded me of both Catch Me If You Can and A Simple Favor. It’s light and playful with the audience but also turns very dark in ways you might not expect.

Unlike most HBO series, the 8 episodes in this season are released over four weeks. On the day of the premiere, the first three episodes are released. The next week, an additional two episodes will be released and another two the following week. Finally, the eighth episode will be out on December 17, 2020.

If you enjoy the first episode, then you can go ahead and enjoy the rest since it stays on track in all the right ways!

The Flight Attendant premieres on HBO Max on November 26, 2020.
