On Amazon Prime Video now, BLACK BOX is a new horror, sci-fi, thriller. It's one of the four movies released as part of the "Welcome to the Blumhouse" horror film anthology during Halloween month.

The film has a 100-minute runtime and manages to maintain a decent pace and maintain its audience engaged. For lovers of sci-fi horror and suspense films, it's certainly worth checking out.

It's easy to recall both Black Mirror and the wonderful mind games we've become acquainted with in Jordan Peele films for this particular film. Maybe quite as trendy or well-executed, but nevertheless worthy of comparison. This movie is entirely a tale of its own, but I'm sure that you can feel a sense of familiarity.

For the record, no, due to the cast being black, I'm not only comparing Black Box to Jordan Peele 's work. Instead, the contrast is all about the way our minds act and how reality can become blurred. Whether it's because of the influence of technology and hypnosis or even our own personality.

Figuring out just how it all goes together and where the intrigue is part of who is involved. You'll probably guess a lot of plot points ahead of time, but the overall entertainment value doesn't ruin it. It didn't, anyway, for me.

The lead in this film is played by Mamoudou Athie (Underwater) as Nolan, but he is extremely well supported by the young Amanda Christine. In Black Box, Amanda Christine (How to Get Away with Murder) plays the daughter of Nolan, Ava, and in every tragic way she is absolutely fine.

The always wonderful Phylicia Rashad also plays the doctor's main role in helping Nolan get back his memories. In Tyler Perry's Netflix movie A Fall from Grace (2020), we recently saw Phylicia Rashad and I hope we'll see her in the future in more genre films.

Finally, I must mention Troy James, who, with his body, does the craziest stuff as a "thing" ... you'll see! You will not know the face of Troy James, but you will know the horror of his body. He was Baba Yaga in the 2019 Hellboy movie and Jangly Man in Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.

Black Box was directed by Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour on the basis of a script he wrote with Wade Allain-Marcus and Stephen Herman. This is Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour 's debut feature film as both a director and a screenwriter.

It's also a feature film debut for Stephen Herman, but he's already got his next post-production feature, so we'll soon see another sci-fi thriller from him. Herman wrote 5 short films prior to Black Box. Wade Allain-Marcus has worked on the series Grown-ish as an executive story editor and also co-wrote the French Dirty movie in 2015.

This horror sci-fi thriller certainly packs a punch at 1 hour and 40 minutes without ever being too much of a slow-burn. It's undoubtedly a mindf*ck, but isn't that what we love from our horror stories in science fiction?! If the name of this horror output from Blumhouse made you think of the Black Mirror anthology series, then that's great for what Black Box delivers!
