Amazon is betting big on the fantasy thriller after making a splash at San Diego Comic-Con with stars Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne shocking viewers during a special screening. During its presentation at the 2019 TCA Summer Press Tour, the company announced an order for Carnival Row Season 2 before the first season was even premiered on August 30, 2019.

Carnival Row is a Victorian set story of mythological creatures whose person invades exotic homelands. Bloom plays Rycroft, a human detective who falls for a Delevingne-played refugee faerie. The series also stars David Gyasi (Interstellar), Karla Crome (Under the Dome), Indira Varma (Game of Thrones), and Tamzin Merchant (Salem).

Carnival Row Season 2 is in service officially! The series stars appeared in an announcement video, showcasing their enthusiasm to return, while subtly mentioning the introduction for this second frame of new characters. Furthermore, it seems apparent from the cast's statements that the second season will pick up directly after the first season events, which saw major moves across the board for the storylines of every major character following the crackdown of The Burgue on its mythical-creature migrants.

Carnival Row Season 2 Details
Sadly, not everything was well on Carnival Row Season 2's early production front, seeing that producer Travis Beacham left the show citing creative differences as Deadline revealed back in October.

Given that Carnival Row was adapted from a well-regarded feature script written by Beacham that appeared on the famed Hollywood Blacklist in 2005, this does not bode well for the direction the series may take.

In addition the Beacham's departure, Marc Guggenheim (Arrow) is no longer serving as showrunner, turning over the reins to Erik Oleson (Daredevil). However, given Guggenheim's involvement in the Arrowverse's Crisis on Infinite Earths and his having stepped in for original showrunner Rene Echevarria, this change might be a bit more cosmetic.

Beacham's script had an interesting route getting from page to screen. “I had totally given up on it,” said Beacham during Carnival Row’s TCA panel.

“It was so big and it wasn’t based on anything. I got asked about it in meetings a lot. To be in Prague and be literally standing on Carnival Row and seeing people in costume, I still haven’t processed it.”

The show's not-so-subtle allegorical parallels to today’s immigration issues were a key topic during the TCA panel. The series’ comic-con activation sparked a minor controversy between Orlando Bloom and the mayor of San Diego.
