After winning the Grand Prix in 2012 for his film, “Reality,” and his 2015 film “Tale of Tales” was entered in the festival, everyone assumed that his upcoming “Dogman” would be at Cannes. Now, that the (partial) lineup for the 2018 Cannes Film Festival has been announced, and “Dogman” was among those films, we finally get our first look at the upcoming Italian film. In the trailer, we meet a gentle dog groomer, played by actor Marcello Fonte, who seems to lead a simple life. That is until he meets a local man, and, as the music in the trailer signals, the dog groomer’s life gets propelled into violence. Filmmaker Garrone has talked about “Dogman” previously, describing the story as an “urban western” and saying, “It might seem like a revenge film, but I think that ‘Dogman’ is also a film about the desperate need for dignity in a world where the law of the strongest prevails and violence seems to be the only way out.” As we mentioned above, the film is set to premiere at Cannes and already has lined up distribution in the UK, France, and of course, Italy. However, there’s no announcement of when we might see the film in the US. However, judging by Garrone’s track record and the footage in the trailer, “Dogman” is a film that we’re excited to finally watch.
