And while he isn’t widely known to mainstream audiences, the French actor has had an accomplished career that has fallen mostly under the radar. Still the actor has over 80 credits to his name, including notable films “La Haine,” “Elizabeth,” and a voice performance in “The Little Prince.” For his latest project, the French actor is playing painter, sculptor, and ceramist Paul Gaugin. As seen in the new trailer for the film “Gaugin: Voyage to Tahiti,” Cassel plays the artist as he becomes disinterested in his normal life, and dreams of life abroad. That latter half of the artist’s life was spent in French Polynesia, where much of his work was based. Underappreciated during his life, Gaugin’s work would become widely recognized following his death. Now, this part of his life is being adapted for the screen by director Edouard Deluc (“Welcome to Argentina“). The biopic has piqued the interest of audiences. Whether fans of biography pieces or work pertaining to Gaugin, the film will position the artist at a complicated point. Completely transfixed by a young woman. Period pieces and biopics seem to always teeter the line of fact and fiction, and we’re sure this film will be no exception. But the camera work of Pierre Cottereau is enticing enough to make us wonder. “Gaugin: Voyage to Tahiti” sails into theaters July 11 in limited release. Here are the synopsis and official trailer: 1891. Gauguin has exiled himself to Tahiti. He wants to rediscover his painting, as a free, wild man, far from the moral, political, and aesthetic codes of civilized Europe. He goes ever deeping into the jungle, coping with solitude, poverty, and sickness. Here he’ll encounter Tehura, who will become his wife, and the subject of his greatest paintings.
