Starring alongside Harbour is Milla Jovovich as the titular villainess, Daniel Dae Kim (who replaced Ed Skrein after a quickly-addressed whitewashing controversy) as Major Ben Daimio, Sasha Lane as Alice Monaghan, Brendan Gleeson as Merlin, and Ian McShane as Trevor Bruttenholm. The presence of The Blood Queen, Monaghan, and Merlin have tipped off fans that the story will take heavy inspiration from “Hellboy: The Wild Hunt” and “Hellboy: The Storm and the Fury,” both of which are beloved story arcs from the comics.

Not long after, it was announced that Neil Marshall (“The Descent,” “Game of Thrones”) would be tackling a hard-R reboot with “Stranger Things” star David Harbour taking on the role of creator and co-screenwriter Mike Mignola’s iconic character. After a first-look photo showed that Harbour had lost his popular dad bod in favor of a more comics-accurate physique, the first trailer has dropped at New York Comic-Con, giving fans a first look at the fresh take on the BPRD and its agents. Although it will inevitably be compared by fans to del Toro’s visionary films, Marshall has proved that he is more than capable of handling the supernatural, epic scope, and practical effects, of which this film will supposedly utilize heavily.

Originally scheduled for January 11, “Hellboy” explodes into theaters on April 12, 2019.
