We can’t be friends if you aren’t excited for “The Meg,” i.e: that new movie where Jason Statham fights a monster shark.
Originally set to be Eli Roth’s next directorial project (that honor was ultimately bestowed unto “Death Wish,”) “The Meg” was, in fact, directed by Jon Turteltaub of “Last Vegas” and “National Treasure” fame. So, yeah, this movie will probably be a mess.
But before you write “The Meg” off entirely, keep in mind that its central premise has Jason Statham fighting a supershark. A prehistoric supershark. If that isn’t the best elevator pitch you’ve ever heard, I’m a supershark hunter. And we all know that I am not a supershark hunter. No, only one man can claim that title. That man is Jason Statham.
Also, I have just learned that Ruby Rose is playing a character named “Jaxx Herd” so get hype.
Here’s the synopsis:
A deep-sea submersible is attacked by a massive creature, previously thought to be extinct, and now lies disabled at the bottom of the deepest trench in the Pacific with its crew trapped inside. With time running out, expert deep-sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) is recruited by a visionary Chinese oceanographer to save the crew from this prehistoric threat.
In a recent interview with Empire Online, Statham offers a much more succinct summation of his new film: “I get hired to rescue a team of scientists who are trapped at the bottom of the sea in their research station by a giant shark. Then all hell breaks loose.”
Here’s to the inevitable sequels, prequels, spin-offs, the cinematic universe and 4D renderings.
“The Meg” also stars Rainn Wilson, Masi Oka, Robert Taylor, and Jessica McNamee. The most anticipated movie of the summer hits theaters on August 10th and you’ll probably never go into the water again or whatever.
