The dog days of summer are upon us. With the buffet of films lined up for the next few months, we honestly could use this respite come August. So if you’re feeling a little fatigued by horror movies, remakes, or fandom feuds, we might have a suggestion equivalent to a calming, unweighted saunter through your neighborhood. And for this one, you may be inclined to take your four-legged, furry friend.

The latest from LD Entertainment (“The Zookeeper’s Wife,” “Jackie,” and “Megan Leavey“) is “Dog Days.” Directed by Ken Marino, “Dog Days” is an ensemble film about the power our canine companions have to bring us together. When we say this is an ensemble film, we mean it too. The film stars Nina Dobrev, Vanessa Hudgens, Adam Pally, Eva Longoria, Tig Notaro, Finn Wolfhard and Ron Cephas Jones. Just to name a few.

Let’s be honest, this isn’t normally the type of film that might make us excited. However, after Ken Marino’s last directorial effort, “How to be a Latin Lover,” shocked everyone and made a fair amount of money at the box office, we’re interested in seeing what he has up his sleeve next. And while Nina Dobrev and Vanessa Hudgens don’t necessarily elicit confidence, names like Adam Pally and Tig Notaro make us believe there might be a few laugh-out-loud moments. We shall see.

The real stars of the trailer are the featured pups. The film offers up a small break from the weighted fare we’ve seen thus far. It’s charming, light feature at the ‘tail’ (see what we did there) end of summer. And really, who could look away from those fluffy faces? Well, maybe a cat person? We’ll see if they throw this film a bone (ok, I’ll stop now).

“Dog Days” hits theaters August 10.

Here’s the full synopsis and trailer:
