Joining Ali this season is Stephen Dorff, who is due for a resurgence, as well as Carmen Ejogo, who plays the mysterious love interest. “Hold the Dark” and “Green Room” director Jeremy Saulnier is on board to direct 2 episodes of the series. However, after his controversial departure, Daniel Sackheim and Pizzolatto took over the remaining episodes.

As always, Pizzolatto is aboard as the creative force behind the series, writing all the episodes and producing this series which he created. After what many believe to be a lackluster Season 2, there’s a lot of pressure on Pizzolatto to see if he can recreate the magic that led to an Emmy-winning first season.

In the new trailer for “True Detective” Season 3, we meet Ali’s character, a cop who was in charge of an investigation about two missing children in the Ozarks. However, as you might expect from “True Detective,” the case at the center of the series is just the window dressing for what looks like a character study, similar to what happened with Matthew McConaughey in Season1. Told over what seems to be three separate time periods, Ali’s character discusses the case and why it led to a complete change in his life.

We’ll find out if he’s able to do that on January 13, 2019, when “True Detective” Season 3 premieres on HBO.
