With vastly different backgrounds and temperaments, they are fatefully mismatched and yet condemned to each other. Set against the background of the Cold War in 1950s Poland, Berlin, Yugoslavia and Paris, it’s the tale of a couple separated by politics, character flaws and unfortunate twists of fate — an impossible love story in impossible times. Named one of our favorite films of 2018, “Cold War” tells the story of two people in post-war Poland. As with many love stories, the man and woman come from very different pasts and shouldn’t work as a couple, but somehow they’re drawn to each other. “Cold War” has been listed as one of the finalists for a potential Oscar nomination. And judging by the reception the film has received thus far, it seems that “Cold War” is a lock for a nomination, and perhaps even a win (this year’s Foreign Film Oscar race is stacked). As mentioned, “Cold War” comes from director Pawel Pawlikowski. He also co-wrote the feature with Piotr Borkowski. The director earned the Best Director award at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. The film stars Joanna Kulig and Tomasz Kot. “Cold War” is in limited release now and will stream exclusively on Amazon soon. You can watch the new trailer below:
