BIOHACKERS is a new Netflix series from Germany. Obviously, we’re more than ready for that after watching DARK. Sure, the two are nothing alike, but both are in the sci-fi genre and from Germany. That’s enough to get started.

While Dark was a dramatic slow-burner featuring time-travel and alternate worlds, Biohackers is faced paced and very current. If you find the trailer interesting, the series itself should work for you as well.

While the character of Mia (Luna Wedler) is the main protagonist, her roommates tend to deliver some wonderful moments. Often filled with humor and endearing actions. If you’ve watched the 2017 coming-of-age fantasy movie Blue My Mind, then you’ll already know that she’s brilliant.

Especially the speed-talking Asian girl should be an instant crowd-pleaser. She’s made a plant-piano and infuses meat flavor into mushrooms. Also, she questions everything. Not because she judges your thoughts or ideas, but because she’s trying to understand your reasoning.

Also, there’s the young man trying to biohack his own body in some increasingly bloody ways. He keeps pushing boundaries to keep his “followers” happy, which instantly reminded me of the main character in Spree (read our review here).

Obviously, this Netflix series focuses on its lead character, but these supporting characters are what make up the world, she’s living in.

Biohackers was created by Christian Ditter and this is the first TV series he has worked on as a writer. However, he has worked on various series as a director. Including the all too short-lived Girlboss (2017). For Biohackers, he also directed the first three episodes.

This first season of the sci-fi thriller series has just six episodes, so if you’re hooked, it’ll be quick to finish.

The trailer does have quite a few spoilers, but most of these are “revealed” during episode one. Essentially, they’re less spoilers and more just describing the plot. And I do find the plot interesting enough to want to watch the entire season. Check it out on Netflix now and try to avoid spoilers.

Season 1 of Biohackers is out on Netflix from August 20, 2020.

Plot
College freshman Mia enrols in Freiburg University’s prestigious medical school. Her interest in revolutionary biohacking-technology is not only limited to scientific interest: Her goal is to gain the trust of star lecturer Prof. Tanja Lorenz. Both women are connected by a dark secret. To shed light on the mysterious death of her brother, Mia enters a dangerous world of illegal genetic experiences. When she meets genius biologist Jasper and his brooding roommate Niklas, she is forced to decide between her principles and her feelings, between avenging her family and protecting her new friends.
