In the first trailer for season 2, we meet a young boy who has been arrested for killing his family. Again, we know the who, but we don’t know the why. Along the way, we are introduced to Carrie Coon’s character, who seems to be a lot more than meets the eye. Coon, as you probably know, is one of the more popular actresses in Hollywood today, with roles in “The Leftovers,” “Fargo,” and most recently, lending some her voice to a villain in “Avengers: Infinity War.”

“Dark and disturbing is my bread and butter,” Coon said in an interview with EW. “Season 1 sold it for me. I loved the idea of a whydunit instead of a whodunit,” she added. “It’s just good old-fashioned fun.”

“There’s very little I can say because understanding her is a part of some of the reveals along the way,” said showrunner Derek Simonds. “She holds a lot of secrets, and she’s deeply, personally involved with the events of the crime. I’ll just say she’s a very formidable, complex woman.”

There’s one carryover from season 1, in the form of actor Bill Pullman. His character is the only link between the first story and this one. So, for those that like a little continuity in your anthology series, “The Sinner” has you covered.

The new season debuts on USA Network on August 1.
