‘Warrior Nun’ Trailer: New Netflix Action Series Puts Swords & Guns In The Hands Of Nuns

What will you fight for? It’s a tricky question that never comes with an easy answer for the characters in Netflix’s new series “Warrior Nun.” The series pushes its narrative through fast-paced action and darkly humorous jokes, something a viewer might be surprised to see in a project heavily focused on Christian symbology and themes.

The show follows a young woman named Ava. A preoccupation with death suddenly transforms into something more as she wakes to find herself in a morgue. Instead of contemplating her own death, the heroine is instead shocked to find a new life among a centuries-old group. Through her eyes, viewers get to know the female fighters intent on keeping Hell, and possibly the forces of Heaven, at a distance.

If the narrative seems familiar it’s probably because the project comes from Ben Dunn’s comic series of the same name. Set very much in the style of manga, the material delves deeper than the show is promising in its first season. Since its premiere in 1994, the comic series has expanded into a ‘Warrior Nun’ universe, something to look out for if the streaming service is intent on several seasons.

The story is not without its own controversy. As with many other projects that delve into religious ideas and iconography, the comics were met with criticism about its portrayals of priests as well as nuns. That same sort of scrutiny has yet to be shown for the series, possibly a nod to it flying under the radar for those outside the comic series’ fandom. All that could change though when the show premieres.
