As the voters in Southern Ijaw local government area of Bayelsa state head to the polling units today, December 6, the two main contenders
for the governorship post, Timipre Sylva (APC) and Seriake Dickson
(PDP), express confidence in their lead and the forthcoming victory.

Saliu Argungu, the deputy inspector general of police, said there would
be restrictions of movement in the affected areas, adding that all the
security agencies were mobilized to beef up security. He also added
that the police cannot confirm some people were killed as corpses
and particulars of the purportedly dead persons cannot be traced.

The PDP claimed to be in early lead based on unconfirmed results
which are being released at polling units and wards since the evening
of Saturday, December 5. However, the APC said that its flag bearer
was leading in five local government areas (LGA) out of eight in
Bayelsa state.

According to Leadership, the PDP announced its candidate was
victorious in all the three wards in Odi and all the units in Kaiama,
Kolokuma/Opokuma LGA, maintained a comfortable lead in Ekeremor,
Ogbia, Sagbama and Yenagoa LGAs.

In their return, the APC declared Sylva was leading in Brass, Ekeremor,
Kolokuma/Opokuma, Nembe and Yenagoa LGAs. They admitted
Dickson was winning in Sagbama LGA, while Ogbia’s results were
‘neck to neck’.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared that
the governorship election in some parts of Bayelsa state would
continue on Sunday due to renewed tensions and threat of possible
violence. Mustapha Leckey, the INEC national commissioner
representing South South, declared that election in Southern Ijaw local
government area ran into hitches due to clashes between rival parties.
