A student of the Kogi State Polytechnic, Saka Seidu, was killed and many others injured when unknown gunmen stormed the place where Senator Dino Melaye was holding anti-government protest in the Kogi State capital Lokoja.

Dino Melaye and his supporters were at the gate of the Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, yesterday morning when the gunmen brandishing dangerous weapons invaded the venue and began shooting sporadically.

Prior to the gunmen’s invasion, Dino had told the crowd that Governor Yahaya Bello had a 30-day ultimatum to pay all workers/pensioners being owed in the state and to re-open all the tertiary institutions or face protests across the state.

The student died in the ensuing gun fire and rains of bullets which lasted about an hour while many others, including security personnel sustained gunshot wounds, but Dino Melaye escaped unhurt.

A detachment from the Nigerian Army, men of the Mobile Police Force and the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Wilson Inalegwu, mobilised to the scene to bring the situation under control.

The police commissioner said he had directed investigatation into the incident, adding that Dino Melaye did not approach the Command for permission before embarking on the protest.
