Business / Why National Electricity Grid Will Continue To Collapse - Discos
« Last post by Rajih on October 24, 2024, 10:32:18 AM »

Distribution Companies (Discos) have asserted that the National grid will continue to collapse unless the federal government takes urgent action to address the root causes and put the necessary infrastructure in place.

The national electricity grid has reportedly collapsed 105 times in the last decade.

Speaking on behalf of the DisCos, the Chief Executive Officer of the Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors (ANED), Sunday Oduntan, highlighted that the lack of investment and proper maintenance has been a long-standing issue in Nigeria’s power sector.

The most recent grid failure, which occurred just days ago, was triggered by an explosion at a transformer in Jebba, causing a sharp drop in load and leading to a system collapse.

Oduntan explained, “The national grid has collapsed 105 times in the last 10 years. The most recent incident was due to a transformer explosion in Jebba, which led to a sudden drop in load, causing the system to collapse. These failures are the result of years of neglect, poor maintenance, and insufficient investment in infrastructure by successive governments.”

The persistent power outages have plunged major cities, including Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt, Enugu, and Kano, into darkness multiple times.

In the past 10 months alone, the grid has collapsed over eight times, causing nationwide blackouts.

On October 19, 2024, Nigeria experienced its third grid collapse in a single week, affecting key regions across the country.

Oduntan further emphasized that without immediate action, the situation will only worsen.

“The national grid will continue to collapse because the necessary infrastructures have not been put in place,” he said, calling for the government and industry stakeholders to declare the issue a state of emergency.

“Unless we address the root causes of these collapses, the grid will keep failing, leaving the nation in darkness,” Oduntan warned.

The DisCos’ call for urgent government intervention highlights the need for comprehensive reform and investment in Nigeria’s power sector to prevent further grid failures and ensure stable electricity for the nation.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperipke Ekpo, has spoken on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's directive to convert filling stations across the country into Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) outlets, as part of efforts to promote cleaner, cheaper energy alternatives.

Speaking at the State House after a federal executive council (FEC) meeting on Wednesday, Ekpo highlighted Tinubu’s commitment to expanding the use of CNG, which he described as safer, more affordable, and environmentally friendly compared to traditional fuels.

“We are aware that the president has established a presidential committee on CNG, and he has charged us to ensure that most filling stations across the country are converted into CNG stations,” Ekpo said. He added that the government will facilitate access to conversion kits to enable Nigerians to adapt their vehicles to run on CNG.

Ekpo emphasized the significant savings offered by CNG, stating that while a litre of petrol can cost as much as N1,000, CNG is available at N200 per standard cubic meter, representing a substantial cost reduction.

The push for CNG aligns with Tinubu's recent comments that Nigerians can choose between buying petrol at N1,000 per litre or adopting CNG at N200 per standard cubic meter.

Ekpo concluded by expressing confidence in the government's efforts to drive the CNG initiative to every part of the country, allowing Nigerians to benefit from the abundant natural gas resources available.

Entertainments / They Wanted to Kill Me - Timaya
« Last post by Rajih on October 23, 2024, 10:08:27 AM »

Singer Inetimi Alfred Odom, popularly known as Timaya, has revealed that people wanted to kill him.

This is as he stated that his decision to use controversy as a strategy backfired.

While speaking in a recent interview with Channels TV, the ‘Dem Mama’ crooner said being controversial was a strategy, but the media overstretched it, which proved costly.

“My being controversial was a strategy but the press took it too far; they wanted to kill me. And back then, it wasn’t the internet; it was newspapers. When they publish it [controversial story], it goes on the street for one week before they publish another one. For that one week, you will be the topic of discussion,” he recalled.

“When you go to buy suya the next week, you will see your face in the newspaper that was used to wrap it. So, it was really hard. And that time, I was the only one causing controversy. People thought I was crazy. My foundation as a Port Harcourt boy also played a role in me being controversial back then.”

Timaya explained that he made deliberate efforts to rebrand after his controversial strategy backfired.

The singer has been involved in several controversies in the past, including retrieving a car gift from his ex-girlfriend, actress Empress Njamah, after their breakup.

He also had beef with producer Nico Gravity years back.

Last year, his colleague, Terry G called him out over alleged debt in music royalties.

« Last post by Rajih on October 23, 2024, 10:06:43 AM »

Vice President Kamala Harris of the United States has stated that Americans are ready to have a woman as President.

As election day comes closer, Harris and Trump have intensified rallies, taking to the airwaves and podcasts on the hunt for an advantage in a race that polls suggest is effectively tied.

When asked if America was ready to elect its first woman, Harris responded, “absolutely”, noting that her candidacy was about turning the page.

“People are exhausted with Donald Trump and his approach, because it’s all about himself,” she said.

Trump, while speaking to supporters in North Carolina, had pitched a very different message.

“This election is a choice between whether we will have four more years of incompetence, failure and disaster, or whether we’ll begin the four greatest years in the history of our country,” he said.

He repeatedly called Harris and her running mate Tim Walz stupid during the rally.

A 17-year-old boy, Cristian Gasca Martinez, has been arrested and charged with the murder of 37-year-old Osvaldo Casas.

His arrest comes after a 16-year-old girl rejected his romantic advances after he was allegedly stalking her so in anger, he shot her stepfather, leaving him to die in the arms of his pregnant wife, according to prosecutors.

He was charged in Houston on October 17, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Prosecutors argued in court that he shot and killed Casas in retaliation after the 16-year-old rejected his romantic interest.

"He was upset that basically, my daughter didn't want to date him," Judith Molina, the girl's mother, told ABC 13.

She also showed the broadcaster a log of dozens of anonymous calls made to her home, most of which she assumes were from Martinez.

Around noon on the day he was shot, Casas was warned by his neighbors that a dark vehicle had been slowly driving past his home, police said. The day prior, someone had vandalized Casas' car.

When Casas went up to the car to confront the occupant, he was shot. He wandered back to his house, but then collapsed.

Casas' pregnant wife attempted CPR to save him and called emergency responders. They found Casas unresponsive and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Blanca Aguirre, Casas' mother, told KHOU that he "died in her hands."

"Osvaldo was a man of deep love and kindness," his wife wrote. "He was loved by so many in our community and never hesitated to lend a helping hand."

She also noted that their son was born on August 23, just 13 days after Casas' death.

Martinez was arrested and is being held in the Harris County Jail on a $200,000 bond.

His first court appearance was scheduled for Monday, October 21.
