Rights group faults unlawful detention of Aminu Adamu over comments on Aisha Buhari. The Defender of Human Rights and Access to Justice Foundation, DHRAJF, has faulted the unlawful detention of one Aminu Adamu Mohammed, a student of the Federal University, Dutse Campus, Jigawa State, over his tweet about Mrs Aisha Buhari, wife of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The group said in a statement signed by Bright Eluagu, ESQ, the Convener, Defender of Human Rights and Access to Justice Foundation (DHRAJF) made available to journalists in Owerri, Imo State capital, that the alleged descent to gross impunity of a high profile individual was disturbing.

Recall that the media was awash with the news of Aminu’s alleged illegal arrest and detention after he made a tweet in Hausa language, saying that Aisha Buhari, the wife of the President had grown “fatter courtesy of poor people’s money”.

The group’s statement reads,” it’s disturbing that a high-profile individual in government like the first lady could descend to the level of gross impunity and executive impudence, by ordering the arrest of Aminu over his innocent tweet.

“For the purpose of clarity, the freedom of expression is fundamental and it is visibly guaranteed under section 39 of the 1999 constitution as amended, which must be protected whether online or offline.

“The social media which represents the true application of democracy, must at all times be seen as a broad circle that strengthens the freedom of speech.

“Furthermore, it is important to point out that the persistent clampdown on opposing views by high-profile individuals in government must stop, because nobody is bigger than an entire nation.

“We call on Aisha Buhari to thread with caution, as she enjoys the last phase of her stay in the presidential villa, even as we call for the immediate release of Aminu from unlawful detention.

” It must, however, be stated that the fight for social liberty which requires eternal vigilance must be won.

“The freedom of speech will continue to be a mighty fortress against oppression, impunity, executive rascality and tyranny.”
