The Proprietress of Liham Schools, Lagos State, Mrs. Tokunbo Johnson, has warned that the country is in danger of losing its identity if parents do not instil cultural values in their children.

Johnson urged that indigenous languages and traditions should not be sacrificed for foreign cultures, adding that it could affect unborn generations.

She spoke on Monday on the school’s premises at Iwaya, in the Yaba area of Lagos State, during the 28th Founders’ Day Anniversary/Cultural Day.

Some parents and guardians, donned in traditional attires, were said to have prepared local dishes for the children and taught the importance of culture at the event.

The proprietress said the school organised the event to remind parents and guardians of the importance of culture.

She said, “It is good we are teaching these children how to speak good English language, but if we are not careful, they may be out of touch with culture. And don’t forget that these children will be the ones to pass on to the next generation our cultural heritage. If we don’t get it right now, it is dangerous for the future.

“We have also observed that some of the kids are not well disciplined, and we believe we can teach discipline through culture. This was why we decided to involve their parents, so that they can be well brought up to become responsible adults.

“Parents should teach their children how to cook their local dishes, how to plait hair, greet and show respect. They should be able to create an African environment around their house.”

The Assistant Head of the school, Mrs. Akanji Christiana, said the school had produced many graduates who had got international scholarships. She described the programme as a good way to start a new term.

“It is sad that people are forgetting their culture. Parents want their kids to speak English language better than their native tongue. This is our way of redirecting society to true education,” she added.
