The Special Committee on Clean up of Ikoyi and Victoria Island, Lagos State, has arrested 11 people for living in abandoned buildings in the areas.

The suspects, made up of eight women and three men, were reportedly arrested in an abandoned building on Club Road, Ikoyi allegedly owned by a late retired military officer.

The Chairman of the Task Force on Environmental and Special Offences, SP Yinka Egbeyemi, said on Tuesday that the committee had received a bunch of complaints from the residents in the area about untoward activities they believed were going on in the building especially at dusk.

He said, “When questioned, all the suspects could not offer explanations on their means of livelihood. All the suspects will be charged to court soon based on circumstantial evidence. The committee is resolute about its determination to rid Ikoyi and VI of abandoned buildings and miscreants.”

SP Egbeyemi said Lekki was the next target in the clean-up exercise, adding that infractions that had been identified in the area would be cleared to restore its original master plan.
