Death toll from the devastating flood in Jigawa State has risen to 28, with over 6,000 families displaced, according to Dr. Haruna Mairiga, Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).

In an interview with newsmen, Dr. Mairiga disclosed that the flooding has severely impacted four local government areas: Auyo, Buji, Jahun, and Miga.

Mairiga said the disaster has disrupted official activities, rendering local government secretariats inaccessible.

He added that the flood has affected 13 local government areas, forcing the state government to establish more than 20 Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps, stating that many of the victims are now housed in primary schools, while others are staying with relatives.

“Our agency has registered over 5,000 internally displaced persons in these camps, excluding nursing babies,” Mairiga stated, adding that some areas have up to three IDP camps due to the severity of the flooding.

He said the government has provided essential supplies, including drinking water, toilets, and mosquito nets, to the IDP camps to ensure the well-being of those affected.
