Authorities confirmed that a Civil Air Patrol plane crashed in northern Colorado on Saturday, killing two people and leaving one injured.

The Cessna 182 aircraft was participating in a search and rescue training exercise in Larimer County when the incident occurred.

The Civil Air Patrol reported that emergency responders quickly arrived on the scene.

Meanwhile, in a statement by Colorado Gov. Jared Polis said, “I’m saddened to hear of the loss of two dedicated Civil Air Patrol members, Pilot Susan Wolber and aerial photographer Jay Rhoten, who lost their lives in today’s crash and my thoughts are with their families, friends and colleagues.”

CNN reports that the plane’s co-pilot was injured in the crash and was airlifted by the Colorado Army National Guard to a medical facility for treatment, as stated by the governor.

The passengers aboard the aircraft had volunteered with the Civil Air Patrol, dedicating their time to improving the safety and well-being of Colorado, the governor said.

“The State of Colorado is deeply grateful for their service, and their commitment will not be forgotten,” the governor said.

The crash occurred in a remote area of Storm Mountain at about 11:12 a.m. MST, according to a Facebook post from the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) confirmed it is investigating the incident via a post on X.

The cause of the crash remains unclear. The Civil Air Patrol has pledged to fully cooperate with the NTSB’s investigation to uncover the factors that contributed to the event.

Major General Laura Clellan, who leads the Colorado Wing of the Civil Air Patrol, expressed her devastation over the loss on Saturday.

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families of those involved in the crash. I would also like to thank all of the first responders who assisted with rescue efforts,” Clellan said.

The Civil Air Patrol, a nonprofit organization and auxiliary of the US Air Force, operates in Colorado's Rocky Mountain region.

It conducts search-and-rescue missions to locate lost hikers, hunters, and downed aircraft, as well as transporting emergency personnel and medical supplies.
