The authorities of the Nigerian military have vowed to track down a group of gunmen who killed five security personnel at Nembe Jetty, Bayelsa State, on Friday.
The murdered security operatives comprised four soldiers and a policeman, with another policeman said to be missing.
The Acting Spokesman for the Nigerian Military, Col. Rabe Abubakar, said in a statement on Saturday that the incident was being investigated.
The gunmen were said to have attacked the JTF Base at Nembe Waterfront at 11.30pm on Friday.
Abubabakar said the Joint Task Force in the Niger Delta had commenced moves to arrest the perpetrators of the dastardly act.
He said the security forces would deal decisively with any persons involved in the attacks and the criminal assault on the nation’s economy.
The Defence Spokesman, who urged the members of the affected community to go about their normal duties, solicited for timely information to security agencies to avert such an ugly incident in the future.
He said, “The Defence Headquarters has confirmed the incident that happened in our location at Nembe Jetty, near Ogolomabiri Community in Bayelsa State, where suspected oil bunkerers attacked our location.
“The incident is being investigated and the Joint Task Force Operation ‘PULO SHIELD’ has moved into action to arrest and apprehend the perpetrators of this unpatriotic and callous attacks.
“The military will deal decisively with anybody or group involved in this and similar acts of attacks or sabotage on the nation’s economy.
“The general public in the affected community are advised to go about their normal business activities and we solicit their cooperation by given timely information to the military or any other security agencies to avert future re-occurrence of this ugly incident.”
