Ogun plans to insure transport unions
on: February 05, 2016, 06:32:08 AM

The Ogun State Government has urged transport unions operating in the state to embrace its ‘Welfare Insurance Policy,’ saying the scheme avails them the opportunity to save for the rainy day.

The General Manager, Ogun State Parks and Garages Development Board, Alhaji Ayo Ogunsolu, gave the advice in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, during a one-day workshop.

The workshop was organised in conjunction with Capital Express Assurance Limited, a statement said on Thursday.

Ogunsolu, who was represented by the Director of Administration and Supplies, Mr. Lola Sotola, said the insurance policy was imperative as it created an avenue for them to receive instant response in times of need, adding that it was an opportunity to save for the future.

He said, “It is imperative and pertinent for the transport unions in the state to adopt the insurance policy being introduced to them to save for the rainy day. It is clear that the state government really care for the welfare of all the transport unions in the state.”

Speaking on the theme of the workshop, ‘Welfare Insurance and Benefits to Transport Operators in Ogun State’, the National Head of Marketing, Capital Express Assurance Limited, Mr. Mathew Ogwezhi, said interested clients would pay N60 on a daily basis.

He said the money would enable the company to insure their clients against circumstances beyond their control.

“Meanwhile, transport workers should at all times ensure that their vehicles are road worthy,” he added.

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who was also in attendance, said the Welfare Insurance Policy was a step in the right direction.

Adejobi urged transport unions in the state to eject unscrupulous elements in their midst, adding that commercial motorcyclists who were fond of wearing earrings and dreadlocks, posed threats to the security of the state.

He said, “How can you be an okada rider (motorcyclist) and have tattoos and dreadlocks, or wear tattered and rugged jeans, or even put on earrings? It doesn’t speak well. It is even wrong traditionally and out of our cultures and customs. In most cases, we arrest them.”
