Civil servants in Ondo State have suspended their two-day warning strike they embarked upon as a result of the non-payment of their two- month salaries by the state government.

Addressing journalists after the meeting of the organised labour in Akure, the state capital, on Thursday, the Chairman of the state Joint Negotiating Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress, Sunday Adeleye, said the union took the decision following the intervention of some national bodies of the labour unions in the country.

Adeleye, however, said the workers would resume the strike if the salaries were not paid on or before October 7, 2015 and public servants whose names had allegedly been removed from the payment voucher during the last verification exercise were not reinstated.

He alleged that about 500 names of workers were allegedly removed from the payment voucher of the state Teaching Service Commission, Universal Basic Education Board and core civil service during the just-concluded verification exercise.

Adeyeye said, “Any worker found guilty of any offence should be made to face the music by following the due process, rather than unjustly removing their names from the payment voucher.

“All salary arrears must be paid in full by Wednesday, October 7, 2015. In order words, the July, August and September salaries must be paid in full by Wednesday, October 7, 2015,” Adeleye insisted.

He however warned the government against the victimisation of any member of the unions who had played one role or the other during the struggle.

The union leader said the strike did not have any political undertone, “all of us are the stakeholders in the government of this state.”

“On behalf of the JNC, I hereby direct all the public workers in Ondo State to resume work tomorrow (today). The government should try and reason with us and yield to our demand. I also want to tell the government that we are not politically-motivated by any individual to embark on strike,” he stressed.
