Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, has sacked education secretaries in 16 of the 17 local government councils in the state.

The governor also dissolved the management of the Enugu State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency.

Poor performance was cited as the reason for the sacking of the affected officials, which took immediate effect.

The state Commissioner for Information, Dr. Ikechukwu Udeuhele, who made the announcement, explained that a panel set up to probe the activities of the Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board had recommended the sacking  of the education secretaries,  except that of the Awgu Local Government Area, who was appointed in June.

He said, “The termination of appointments of the education secretaries is to enhance and strengthen the development of basic education in the state.”

Specifically, he said the sacked education secretaries allegedly conspired with the past local council chairmen to derail the basic education system by perpetrating some “illegal” practices.

However, in a bid to promote education in the state, 2000 primary school teachers would  be employed across the 17 local councils, the commissioner said.

Udeuhele said the recruitment would enhance teaching and learning in the education system.

“Those to be employed must have a minimum qualification of National Certificate of Education from recognised institutions.”

“This recruitment will accommodate at least 100 persons each from the 17 local government areas of the state and will be evenly spread across the 260 electoral wards in the state,” the commissioner added.
