The on-going trial of the Deputy Senate President,
Chief Ike Ekweremadu, alongside Senate President
Bukola Saraki sparked protest in Enugu State on
Saturday.
We reports that thousands of residents took
to the streets at Awgu, in Enugu West Senatorial Zone, demanding an end to “persecution of their son.”
The protest, witnessed a mammoth crowd from
many parts of the State, who headed straight to the constituency office of Hon. Toby Okechukwu
representing Awgu/Aninri Federal Constituency.
Some of their placards displaced by the protesters
read: “Enough is Enough; Life Wire of Igbo race
should not be harassed; Presidency leave the Senate
Alone; Our Son, Dr. Ike Ekweremadu and Senate
Leadership Are on Course; Buhari, APC, let Ikeoha
be”.
After a meeting with the Federal Lawmaker, they
came up with a communique, where they vowed to
resist any attempt to remove Ekweremadu from his
current position.
The communique was read by Prof. Sam Ukpabi, the
traditional ruler of Ekoli Okpanku, former SSG Enugu
State as well as former Provost, Nigeria Defence Academy.
It read: “We, the people of Enugu-West Senatorial
District of Enugu State, in a massively attended
stakeholders rally in Awgu, headquarters of Enugu-
West Senatorial District, today, July 9, 2016, reviewed
the state of the nation, especially the politics of
bitterness, nepotism, hate and crushing economic
hardship, which a narrow cabal in the All Progressive Congress (APC), has unleashed on Nigerians since assuming the reins of power at the center.
