Students of Olabisi Onabanjo University yesterday staged a protest over the death of their colleagues in a road accident last Friday.
The students who stormed the scene of the accident were moved to tears when they saw the wreckage of the commercial bus, strewn with some clothes and torn notebooks of their colleagues.
This some how turned them violent as they started hurling stones at vehicles causing traffic gridlock. They were about to set the container which was still at the scene of the accident ablaze when some of the lecturers that were around cautioned them that the contents of the container might explode causing more havoc.
The students later marched to the manufacturing company where the container was supposed to be delivered and vandalized some of the vehicles parked there. Meanwhile, the southwest chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Students has demanded a compensation of 10 million Naira giving the company a seven-day ultimatum to comply. President, Student Union Government, OOU, Adegbesan Adenola, in a statement called for arrest and prosecution of the truck driver.
“The state and federal law prohibiting articulated vehicles from plying the highways in the daytime should be enacted and rigorously supervised to ensure compliance, where such already exists.
“The necessary security agencies should be alert to their duties to monitor the movement of vehicles on the highway.” The statement reads.
