The leadership of the now suspended
Students'Union Government of University of Lagos
has described as illegal and unacceptable the
suspension of both the Executive and Legislative
arms of their Union and the conditions giving to
students to sign as undertaking by the University management. According to Mr Mohammed Olaniyan, the President
of the students' Union, signing the undertaking is
tantamount to signing away their rights. He wondered why the management will decide to
suspend the students' union when the section 40
of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of
Nigeria (as amended) grants the right to peaceful
assembly and association and equally debunked
the assertions by the, management that the protest was violent as no school facilities were destroyed. He also stated that the union saw no reason why
the school management will direct already
matriculated students to apply before they will be
re-absorbed into the institution as stipulated in the
terms and conditions of the undertaken. “Let us state unequivocally that no student was
expelled, suspended or rusticated as a
consequence of our peaceful protest. Hence, we
find it shocking that the school management has
decided to re-absorb/re-admit already matriculated
students. Besides, it is truism that an agreement entered into under duress and undue influence is
voidable at the instance of the influenced party. We,
therefore, reject in strong terms the terms and
conditions attached to our resumption.” He
stressed.
