The management of the University of Ibadan (UI) on Tuesday announced the suspension of all students’ union activities.

The development followed the order on students to vacate the campus.

This suspension is contained in a statement by the university’s head of public relations, Olatunji Oladejo.

He noted that: “The Union Executive Council and Students Representatives Council have been suspended. All activities of the union and council have been suspended, too”.

He explained that the university’s management engaged with students over the weekend to discuss their grievances and that the vice chancellor called an emergency meeting of the university senate on Tuesday at noon.

“That meeting revealed all the issues that led to where we are; that is, postponement of the first semester examinations for the 2016/2017 academic session”, Oladejo said.

The official added that the university senate made the decision to suspend students’ union activities “until further notice” at the conclusion of the meeting.

University of Ibadan students embarked on a protest demanding that the institution provide them with student identification cards, as promised months ago.

UI Vice Chancellor, Olayinka Idowu, in response to the demonstration, announced the closure of the school and suspension of the semester’s examinations till July 17.
