How To Fix “data-vocabulary.org schema deprecated” Error on blogger/blogspot

With the increasing usage and popularity of http://schema.org  google decided to focus our development on a single scheme. As of April 6, 2020, http://data-vocabulary.org  markup will no longer be eligible for Google rich result features.

Schema.org structured data scheme is to be used as a replacement of data-vocabulary to be eligible for Google rich results features.

How to convert data-vocabulary.org structured data to schema.org on blogspot

Google on the blogpost have mentioned how to do this conversion. If you are using data-vocabulary.org, your result will be as follows.

Edit yout HTML Template >>

After creating a backup, access and edit the HTML code of your blog's theme. For Blogger, go to 'Theme' in the control panel. AND , then go to 'Edit HTML'.

Don't press "Ctrl+F" to search right away. Click anywhere inside the HTML console first before "Ctrl+F" searching the following:

1. Search for any "data-vocabulary" in your blog's HTML code and replace that with "schema".

REPLACE

2

Make sure to apply the right property and not misrepresent any content (i.e. Product review but tagged as "forum" or 'http://schema.org/forum'), else you'll get a Manual Action. Since you're modifying your blog's Breadcrumbs, type in 'http://schema.org/Breadcrumb'.

If you don't get this, Wait for your Theme developer to Fix data-vocabulary.org issue
If you don’t have any coding skills, you can wait until your theme developer release a new version of the theme. Since this is a global issue, all of the developers are bother about this new change made by Google. They will come with a new version of the theme that supports schema.org.

You don’t have to worry about the changes until April 6. You will see only a warning message on the search console. It won’t affect traffic or any other performance. However, you will it as an error after 6 April 2020.

Google search console alerts users of Easy Breadcrumb that data-vocabulary.org schema is deprecated on websites. Data-vocabulary.org schema deprecated causing warning on GSC.

Today, I received an email from search console about breadcrumbs issue. I think most of the webmasters should have received this email as well. If your site has breadcrumbs enabled with data-vocabulary.org, it's time to replace it with schema.org.

It seems that the SEO plugin or the theme that has data-vocabulary.org needs an update for replacement.

Sunsetting support for data-vocabulary

Structured data schemes such as schema.org and data-vocabulary.org are used to define meaningful shared structures for Web based markup applications. With the increasing usage and popularity of schema.org we decided to focus our development on a single SD scheme. As of April 6, 2020, data-vocabulary.org markup will no longer be eligible for Google rich result features.

As a preparation for the change and starting today, Search Console will issue warnings for pages using the data-vocabulary.org schema so that you can prepare for the sunset in time. This will allow you to easily identify pages using that markup and replace the data-vocabulary.org markup with schema.org.

A bit more about structured data

Google uses standardized formats of structured data and shared schemes to provide information about a page and the things described on that page. These are used for two main purposes.

(I) Understand the content of the page
(II) Enable special search result features and enhancements

What are structured data formats?

Structured data formats such as JSON-LD, RDFa and Microdata define a small number of fixed structures for encoding descriptive data. They usually build on lower-level standards, such as JSON and HTML. To learn more about the supported and recommended formats, please check the developers guide.

What are structured data schemas?

Alongside the structured data formats, structured data schemas work like a kind of dictionary, defining terms for types of thing (e.g. "Person", "Event", "Organization"), and for properties and relationships (e.g. "name", "worksFor"). By maintaining this separation between format and schema, it is possible for users of different formats to take advantage of the same, widely shared, schemas.

Data-vocabulary schema

Google's "Data Vocabulary" project was an important milestone in the development of Web-based structured data, as it led to our collaboration with other search engines to create schema.org. However it is now very outdated and it is generally preferable to use more widely shared vocabulary from Schema.org. Therefore data-vocabulary.org markup will stop being eligible for Google search result features and enhancements.

Please note that this is the only consequence of this change. Pages using data-vocabulary schema will remain valid for all other purposes. In order to be eligible for Google rich result features we recommend converting your data-vocabulary.org structured data to schema.org.

For example, here is how you would change the data vocabulary to schema.org

Data-vocabulary.org

Data-vocabulary.org

Schema.org

Wordpress users: Wait for Yoast to update the plugin with data-vocabulary based breadcrumbs data to be removed.
